Yohji Yamamoto Spring 2006 Collection from Paris Fashion Week-A venture from creation to the future-Fashiontribes Fashion Blog

 

Yohji Yamamoto has never had a lack of credibility.  So last year, when backstage at his show he mentioned a desire to compress the history of the world-from the dinosaurs to present times-into his collection, few doubted his intent.  The collection he did show didn't exactly give us a history of the world in 15 minutes, but it did reference history, as well as provide a new spin on typical Yohji.  Starting with a pass of slouchy pants-desirable denim in baggy jeans, drape-bib overalls and skinnier cuffed denims all paired with white shirts adorned with intricate bows and over-sized tuxedo jackets, Yohji brought his A game.  While the second grouping- ruffled dresses and simple suits in camouflage-was expertly cut, I can never agree with the use of such a hideous fabric.  No worries, I am sure it will show up in black in the stores. 

We then moved to a series of what can only be described as typical-Yohji.  Black jackets and pants that seem simultaneously draped and stiff, featuring accents only he could dream of.  The puzzling aspect of the collection came in the form of a series of black, red and white dresses accessorized with leather-covered tubing, perhaps a nod to the future?.  Some appeared to have a spare amount, making a jaunty scarf, while other models walked down the runway literally entangled.  The finale piece, a giant, hovering trench with a long tail (hello, triceratops) punctuated his earlier statement and wowed the audience.  No one else does it quite like Mr. Yamamoto.
