Super Chic Limited Edition Designer Tees Help Fight Malaria. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG
How's this for the shame-on us-category: despite knowing how to beat the disease for a century, malaria reamins the number one killer of children under five in Africa, claiming 3,000 children & pregnant mothers each day & more than 1 million lives annually. To bring attention to this disgusting plight, five New York fashion designers have teamed up with Glamour magazine to raise awareness & money with a series of limited edition, customized white tees sold exclusively on Shopbop.
Images were screened onto a white cotton bop basics short-sleeve t-shirt and, similar to a work of art, signed by the designer and limited to 500 shirts (100 per design) produced for sale:
- Peter Som adorned his with a bow and Chantilly lace detailing, reflecting his desire “to elevate the everyday t-shirt into something with a touch of femininity and luxury."
- Thakoon opted for a much simpler design - a pink water color heart over the heart because “a bleeding heart is the definition of true love.”
- Super-luxe jeweled snakes adorn the front & back of the Marchesa tee.
- Erin Fetherston was inspired by her fave locket necklace.
- Mosaics & body shapes inspired the line drawings of fairies on the Jovovich-Hawk design.
“We’re thrilled to introduce these amazing designers to our readers,” says Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour,
which is featuring the program & the designs in the October issue.
“Each one of them is committed to fashion and to making a difference in
the world—and their t-shirts underline that commitment.”
Profits from the tees benefit Malaria No More
- which is working to reduce malaria infections & eliminate deaths
by engaging individuals, organizations, and corporations in the private
sector to help provide life-saving bed nets and other critical
interventions to families in need across sub-Saharan Africa. Because
insecticide-treated mosquito nets are the most effective way to control
this deadly disease, for each one of the signed tees sold, Glamour,
Shopbop, and Malaria No More will donate three bed nets to women in
Africa. Bed net manufacturer Sumitomo Chemical will match the
donations, making it six bed nets for every t-shirt sold.
Available at Shopbop.com.
