Nominated as the “Most Sustainable US City” in 2006 by sustainlane.com and the second-most green city of the world by grist.org, Portland knows for eco. Their 2006 Fashion Week was billed as a Green & Sustainable Showcase, and featured the launch of six sustainable collections, while at the upcoming Portland Fashion Week 2007 from October 19-24, eco-friendly hair styling products will be used on models, the runway will be built using earth-friendly materials & guests will stay at sustainable hotels. The event itself will be staged in a LEED Gold-Certified green Building - Portland’s chic new South Waterfront District in the John Ross Tower; located on the electric Portland Streetcar line, fashionistas can leave the gas-guzzling ride at home and still pull right up to the front door.

Unlike other fashionweeks where it can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to stage even the most stripped-down of shows (ahem, New York), Portland is just the opposite. "I have come across many high-quality independent designers who can’t have their work shown in a fashion week because they don't have deep financial pockets," explains Executive Producer Chris Cone. "Portland Fashion Week's business model is such that, for a nominal fee, a designer can have their show produced and staged entirely by us."
