"We're trying to manipulate the hair so it looks like five times the actual amount of hair," explains stylist Ashley Javier, who designed the hair for the Isaac Mizrahi Fall 2007 show for Herbal Essences. "We're also making it blown out straight - but not so ironed or manipulated - so it feels a little bit fuller and a little bit more matte, but it's also got a finish and polish. By using a mousse on both wet and dry hair to build it up, you can manipulate it so there is volume is on the sides and it looks like a lot of hair."

Other trends in hair include coiffures that multitask from short to long on demand. "A great haircut is a swingy bob that's a little bit shorter in the back and swings forward, but nothing too 60s - more 80s. And know that there are extensions and falls if you need them," advises Javier. "It's about the novelty of having a short haircut, and also being able to have long hair for any occasion. That's the trend: being able to have it all, and knowing you don't have to stay with one novelty too long."

Ashley Javier's tips on getting the look for fall:

• START WITH A LEAVE-IN CREAM "Apply when you come out of the shower and your hair is wet, so you protect your hair before doing anything else."
• PILE ON THE MOUSSE "When you're blowdrying, use your fingers & hands so you don't over blowdry with your brush and smooth it out too much."
• ...& STILL MORE MOUSSE "Once your hair is really dry, apply another coat of mousse. It makes your hair even more full, and starts to look like it's five times the amount of hair you actually have."
