PODCAST: Did Giles Deacon Channel the Same Confused Muse as Michael Kors for Fall 2006? A Mish Mash Overload of 5 (or More) Collections in One. London Fashionweek 2006 Runway Review. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG & PODCAST - MP3 File

Oh how we like us a lil' Giles here at Fashiontribes.com, which is why we were sorely disappointed at the Fall 2006 collection. Like the Michael Kors collection, there were individual looks we loved, but it didn't all hang together as a single, artistic vision.

The play-by-play at Giles Deacon (as best we could ascertain):

  • From the adorable baby doll with oversized balloon sleeve, the run of show suddenly jumped to a black sweater/pant sportswear ensemble. Then it was onto a black dress with kooky purple cartoon print & odd pancake, er hat, and back to another adorable ruffle-hemmed baby doll.

  • More plain-jane sportwear followed, and in succession: a gorge oversized black overcoat with ginormous patch pockets, more pop art (a pink shift with black circle print & oversized banana, er hat) and a patchwork kimono-inspired frock.

  • A draped grey "toga" with aluminium abstract sculpture, er hat, was next, followed by an adorable purple & black baby doll, and then an extremely ladylike black knit ladylike suit with yellow/black checkerboard thingy, er hat. In the final stretch, highlights included a fab giant caftan/muumuu that wouldn't have looked out of place on the YSL runway, when Yves was still at the helm of the house.

Yikes.

While a map might have helped, focus would have helped even more. Of the various mini collections, the most successful were the baby doll frocks and Deacon's experiments in volume. We only hope he isn't experiencing pressure from the suits to hurry up and shore up the financial bottom line...an almost unfair pressure on a designer, even one as creative as Deacon.
