“I know sometimes we shock people when they ask about a piece,” notes the Copenhagen-based design consultant and eponymous owner of Oliver Gustav Studio, a high-end mash-up of home-furnishings, art, antiques, interior-design consultancy, and boutique. While gently deriding his fellow Danes for being an "expensive but not luxurious" society with cookie-cutter habits in home furnishings, as a non-Dane, I can attest that the following would raise eyebrows (for both price & aesthetic reasons) most anyplace else as well:
- a legless, wall-attaching leather love seat by the Danish Modern designer Poul Kjaerholm: $50,000
- a silver-plated brass cabinet by Italian architect Vincenzo de Cotiis: $90,000
- an alabaster bed with a goth-chic aesthetic by Paris-based American fashion designer Rick Owens: $227,000 (above)
- a marble bathtub - smooth inside and textured on the outside - designed by Gustav: $300,000
“The problem in Denmark is that everyone lives alike...and I’m doing something totally different” continues Gustav, who himself decorates with a preference for items that whisper rather than shout. “I am kind of frightened of colors. I don’t like objects that attract too much attention.”
Which, given his love of tongue-wagging pricetaggery, struck me as somewhat ironic, but funny.
