Museum shows and glitzy auctions are a common source of trends in high-end fashion, accessories and textile design. A high-profile "selling exhibition" curated for Sotheby's Originals by Janice Blackburn, one of the UK's most influential curators and promoters of contemporary arts and crafts, showcases the talent of Tord Boontje. A graduate of the influential Eindhoven Academy in the Netherlands, his distinctive aesthetic is simultaneously familiar, alien, fantastic, practical - and above all: covetable.
His stunning and witty Fig Leaf wardrobe (right) is a visual pun best appreciated in person, as is his outrageously cool, tulle festooned Princess Chair (above).
"His work immediately stood out for me as different to what I was seeing in other places," notes Blackburn. " I began taking a real interest in everything he did: furniture, fabrics, jewellery. I found his use of new technology, materials and techniques is so imaginative. I also love the fact that they have given made by hand a new contemporary identity."
Here are some of my other favorite Boontje pieces from the exhibition:
I couldn't resist the last one because I currently live in Portlandia...where we put birds on things!
