Fashion's Camo Trend Makes it to Makeup - Fashiontribes Podcast Ep. 143 (Apocalytical Fashion Tribe)
A time-honored sartorial strategy for appropriating power and military might is by wearing it a la mode. "By taking uniforms out of their normal context, designers can subvert their original messages of power and prosperity," observes Fiona Ffoulkes, author of HOW TO READ FASHION: A Crash Course in Style, Designers and Couture (Rizzoli). While the strong runway camo trend was sparked by the various well-funded wars on this-n-that, the print has long since departed Trendyland and become so ubiquitous as to almost be considered a neutral.
Almost.
There is still some of the outlaw left in camo which MAC Cosmetics picked up on for Fall 2014 by skirting its traditional role in the war machine. Instead, they focused on the print's ties to survivalists and outlaws and came up with a much fresher take: Artificially Wild, a guerilla-chic collection subversive greys, golden beige-browns and soft, dirty mauves. "Declare independence," the copy reads, and "stir a restless freedom of expression" with statement lip shades, naughty neutrals and a surprisingly polished and sculpted full-foundation face." "Camouflage reigns supreme," they continue. I agree. I also agree with their offbeat angle.
