Makeup artist Pat McGrath was maquillaging "powerful dolls" for this runway show, turning them into the stars of a sartorial fairy tale Yohji Yamamoto was spinning for Fall 2014. Dolls have a long history dating back to Ancient Egypt where they were associated with both magic and protection. And, obviously, children's toys. Interestingly, there has never really been a distinction made between the plaything component and the magic part.
The enormous, padded/puffy silhouettes of this Yohji collection very much convey a feeling of protection and snuggliness, while the voluminous silhouettes bring to mind a small kid exploring in mom's closet and playing dressup. The exuberant prints are also very charming and childlike. (image)
