If you were a member of a mysterious cabal and had an impromptu, intrigue-filled midnight rendezvous to attend, what would you throw on? Getting dressed for the dark while in the dark is the spark behind the Fall 2014 Assembly collection by the wonderfully ecletic Greg Armas.
His background is studying fine art and curation, however he was lured away from Los Angeles, where he founded the vintage concept boutique Scout LA to NYC to open Assembly New York. Although he's a fashion design autodidact, he is a serious student of vintage design and focuses on learning from our sartorial past to inform our future. "This collection is a unisex and uniform range, combining exclusively natural and historic fabrics in a spirit of a future-primitive instinct; utilizing the organic technology of those survivalists before us," explains Armas about the assemblage of fine fabrics, fun touches (pockets lined with fur). Comfort is key, as is durability plus a certain archival quality - which I think was expressed beautifully in the fur & felt hats he collaborated on with Albertus Swanepoel. "Subtlety is paramount," continues Armas, "and design details are concealed and personal, available only to the wearer."
How does this relate to the Apocalytical fashion tribe? Armas's focus on mysterious midnight rendezvous and the "dark" got me to thinking about the larger, overarching themes of this approach. Intrigued? The podcast answers all! (image)
