In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Black-roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses run down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawn-light smiles on you leaving, my contentment.
- from White Room by Cream (on Wheels of Fire, 1968)
For whatever reason, this song by Cream was the first thing I thought of when I saw this collection by Gareth Pugh. All pristine white, cream and silver using plastic contruction sheets (!), acrylic paillettes, textural mystery material and even plush fur - and all overlaid onto voluminous, cocoony silhouettes, some fantastic & some even more so. Asked for the meaning of all this futuristic sartorial madness, the designer admitted that this season, instead of designing around a specific concept or muse, he decided to be "intuitive."
And intuition can certainly result in amazing things, in the right hands. Whether or not his aesthetic is to your taste (talkin' to you, old and tired protest: "who'd wear THAT?!) isn't the point. What is: the way Pugh took modern, offbeat fabrics and futurey silhouettes and managed to infuse them with retro elegance: some New Look, some Cristobal Balenciaga, some vintage YSL.
