Since Pong was released in 1972, video games have developed into an entire genre that combines painting, writing, sculpture, music, storytelling and cinematography. The Smithsonian recently honored this new artform with an axhibition: The Art of Video Games. Focusing on the interplay of graphics, technology and storytelling, using examples of gaming systems ranging from the Atari VCS to the PlayStation 3, curator Chris Melissinos - founder of Past Pixels and a collector of video games - showcased video interviews with developers and artists, large prints of in-game screen shots and historic game consoles. There were even some playable classics including Super Mario Brothers, The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, Flower and of course, Pac-Man!
GamesRadar compiled an awesome list of the Top 100 best video games of all time, so I further refined their list, selecting the images that I found particularly compelling, like 2001's Final Fantasy X, above, intriguing in terms of the color palette used, or just too influential not to include (paging Pac-Mon, Pokemon & World of Warcraft). And each palette is, in its own way, runway ready and styled to go.
