The gorgeous new Miss America, Nina Davuluri, has her roots in Andhra Pradesh on the southeastern coast of India. During yearly visits to the country, she trained in both the Bharatnatyam & Kuchipudi forms of Indian classical dance; the former is modern revival of an ancient temple-dance artform called Cathir, while the latter originated in Andhra Pradesh. For the talent portion of the beauty contest, she performed a rollickingly fab Bollywood fusion dance routine which she developed with Nakul Dev Mahajan, choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance. “It’s the first time Bollywood has ever been performed on the Miss America stage," noted Davuluri, "and it’s such an honor for myself, my family and the Indian community, as well."
Here are five excellent Nina-approved style not-so-secrets to try for yourself:
#5: Baby blue & claret-red look most excellent together. With so many variations of oxblood, wine & burgundy in stores for fall, take advantage of these sartorial riches to buy at least one item in this chic shade. And pair it with something in a snazzy schade of aquamarine blue, such as a scarf, belt, necklace or earrings.
#4: Bangles! Stack 'em high, higher, highest. Repeat on other arm.
#3: State it with a standout necklace. Find the biggest, boldest & baddest one you feel comfortable wearing & workitworkitworkit.
#2: The eyes have it: bold eyeliner at the very least & a fringe of fake fluttery lashes if you really wanna pump up the volume.
#1: Smart is the New Sexy. Girlfriend graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science, earning Dean’s List, Michigan Merit Award, and National Honor Society Award honors along the way. She is now planning to apply to medical school.
