The scene: the glamorous golden years of 1960s Rome, captured in black & white at the entrance to the historic Bulgari shop in Via Condotti. A very young girl named Isabella is accompanied by her mother, Ingrid, who loved to rock Bulgari bling both in her personal life and in her many movies, including The Visit (1964).
In the years that followed, Isabella grew up and into the glamour spotlight, first in films and then on countless fashion magazine covers, including Vogue.
The daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, Isabella has long been an emblem of natural yet sophisticated beauty, fascinating audiences with her Hollywood pedigree, striking looks, and offbeat choices in movie roles. Most recently, she put her starpower to work for Mother Nature, writing/producing/hosting the amusingly-named series Green Porno on the Sundance Channel; a unique combination of comedy, cartoons, and scientific curiosity, she acts out the reproductive habits of marine animals and insects - scientifically accurate but also extremely entertaining - to raise awareness of how delicate the futures of the various creatures are. She also participated in Bulgari's 125th anniversary celebrations in 2009, as one of many celebs to support the partnership between Bulgari and Save the Children, lending her face to Fabrizio Ferri’s photo shoot featuring the silver ring created by Bulgari to raise funds for the humanitarian project “Rewrite the Future”.
Bulgari & Isabella have partnered up again, this time on her eponymous bag which reinterprets the glamorous frame handbags of her mother's era for the divas of today.
In particular, the semiprecious-stone studded enamel lock references the actress's beloved vintage bracelets, while the lining fabric is printed with a snail motif in an eccentric nod to her green activism.
Choices include a futuristic'y black patent, chocolate brown chevron canvas & leather, walnut pony calf, and a black & white zebra ponyskin. "The collaboration with Bulgari was a delightful and creative experience," says Isabella about the project which was several months in the making. "A bag is of course an indispensable accessory for us women, and we tried to make it become an object of elegance and luxury, like a jewel. I added a very personal touch to the bag, printing the drawings that I make for my surrealist films about animals on the lining, with the intention of combining art and design, fashion and cinema, humor and elegance.”
