Since no two people smell alike, I usually don't recommend buying fragrance as a gift; it's unlikely that what smells wonderful on you will work on someone else. And yet, in a blind test on men and women - of different ages, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles - to my surprise NATORI, created by the award-winning fashion designer Josie Natori and marketed as a fragrance for women, worked on most of the men as well.
That being said, Natori explains, "In creating this scent, a floral oriental, is something I live for, says If I forget my lipstick, my handkerchief or my fragrance, I feel naked." I would not show this statement to the man in your life...unless he borrows your clothes.
NATORI opens with an effervescent blend of fresh rose petals enriched by deep, dark plum notes. The heart is a hybrid of ylang ylang, purple peony and night blooming jasmine. However, it is the base of black patchouli, amber and a hint of musk that gives it its gender-bending quality...which is mirrored in the bottle; purple, the yin/yang of colors, is comprised of red (usually symbolizing women) and blue (men).
A perfect perfume for a woman and for one helluva enlightened man.
Available as Eau de Parfum Spray (1.7 oz for $80; 3.4 oz for $110), Silk Shower Creme (8 oz/$55), Silk Body Creme (5 oz/$75), and a Fragranced Candle (6.35 oz/$75) - exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks.com.
