Timeless chic shades of black, white and crimson showed up the slackers in inappropriately casual attire (paging Fern Mallis in a shapeless floral sack, Marina Rust Connor in a matronly bulky strapless dress paired for some unknown reason with clunky black secretary pumps, and Gigi Mortimer in a sleeveless cabana-ready striped resort number), and those that let the trends wear them (NYC Mayor Bloomberg's date in garish head-to-toe shiny purple Ralph Lauren).
