The most recent Nielsen/NetRatings show that the day after American Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the following Cyber Monday will probably be eclipsed by the second Monday in December, dubbed Green Monday.
33% more visitors than last year were on eBay on Black Friday, and their other companies also reported similarly massive increases in traffic - 34% at PayPal & 30% at Shopping.com - which eBay's Dean of Education, Jim Griffith, attributes to increased convenience. "As Internet shopping grows increasingly convenient and consumers become more comfortable buying on the Web, more and more shoppers are avoiding the long lines and going online to check everything off their holiday lists."
With increased shopping convenience comes procrastination, and almost half the shoppers surveyed by Shopping.com reported that they intend to leave the bulk of their holiday shopping until well into December. "Green Monday outpaced Cyber Monday in the past few years in terms of revenue and consumer traffic on our site," notes Shopping.com's CEO, Josh Silverman. "More shoppers are comfortable doing the bulk of their online shopping later in the season. And after surveying our merchants, we found that a whopping 72 percent are offering next day shipping this year as a response to demand to shop later."
