My latest piece for Dan's Papers (NYC's Hamptons) is up at DansHamptons.com, covering how to take the biggest runway trends and make them work for home decor.
The top five fashion trends that make for au-courant crib chic:
1. MENSWEAR-INSPIRED LOOKS
From pin-stripe suited Gordon Gekko acolytes to Garbo'esque androgenes, Balenciaga, Hermes, Gaultier, Gucci and Bottega all showed variations on menswear chic. Get the look at home with old-money fabrics from Allegra Hicks, pinstriped bedding by Michael Kors & a serious steel gray London sofa by Armani Casa. (Alexander Wang, Armani Casa)
2. BACK IN BLACK
The timeless chic of black appealed to Oscar, Jil, Calvin, Narciso, Ralph & Valentino - and it looks equally chic in glossy deco'ish lamps (Versace Home), ebony hued nesting trays (Allegra Hicks), and stylish black leather chairs (Nicole Miller). (Ralph Lauren, Allegra Hicks)
3. EXUBERANT PRINTS & BOLD GRAPHICS
London up-and-come'r Henry Holland summed up the newly non-ironic, happy mood with hip-grazing 80s tees baring massive neon slogans such as Wham Bam, Thankyou Stam & Let's Play Naked Twister, Linda Evangelista. Prints cheer up any abode: a set of Missoni bath towels in a lively ikat print, red silk parrot print pillows by Etro, and the black & white eight-sided ottoman from Todd Oldham by La-Z-boy. (House of Holland, Todd Oldham by La-Z-boy, Missoni Home)
4. BRIGHT COLORS
Black may be back, but so is a rainbow of Skittles according to Marc Jacobs, Pucci, Marni, Lanvin, Ungaro, Dior, Anne Klein, Stella McCartney, Isaac Mizrahi & Versace. At home, a bold pop of color can cheer up any room, be it a tasty tangerine-colored candle (Tory Burch), a fuschia & red Isaac Mizrahi Pop Flower soap dish for Target, or the tomato red 1950s'esque Todd Oldham by La-Z-Boy Valerie couch. (Isabel Toledo for Anne Klein; Tory Burch Home; Isaac Mizrahi for Target)
5. METALLICS & SHINE
To the surprise of many, the metallic trend continues to shine brightly in accessories (Vuitton, Versace, Lacroix Couture), in skirts & dresses (Ralph, Lanvin, Valentino Couture, Elie Saab, Chanel, DVF), and full-on Studio 54 armor (Dolce, McQueen, Hermes). To keep it classy rather than Vegas, try Donna Karan Gold Leaf bedding with subtle gold thread accents, a teensy white Bonboniere porcelain orb with glowing gold faux crack by Ted Muehling, a silver dogbowl nestled in signature basketweave chocolate leather by Bottega Veneta, or a fabulously kitschy gold gnome table base by Philippe Stark for Kartell...just try choosing between Napoleon & Attila! (Dolce & Gabbana; Philippe Stark for Kartell; Ted Muehling)
