Listen to How You Can Fight Domestic Violence By Donating Your Old Cellphone: MP3 File
Now that winter's almost a distant, dreary memory, you probably have spring cleaning on the brain (I didn't say you had to do anything about it, it's the thought that counts after all).
And chances are you've got an old cellphone laying around. In fact, there are over 65 million old cellphones kicking around homes in the US alone. Why not put it to good use by donating it to The Body Shop's Donate a Phone, Save a Life campaign?
In partnership with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV http://www.ncadv.org/), the Wireless Foundation - a non-profit that uses wireless technology to help American communities (http://www.ncadv.org/) and Lifetime Television for Women (http://www.lifetimetv.com/community/olc/index.html), "Donate a Phone, Save a Life" will put all those phones to good use.
Drop off your old phone at any of The Body Shop locations in the US by August 31, 2005, and it will be refurbished, sold, or recycled, with proceeds benefiting the NCADV and the Wireless Foundation. A number of phones will also be distributed to approximately 200 women's shelters for at-risk women who need access to a personal safety system when domestic violence strikes.
The fact is, of every two people you know, one has either suffered at the hands of domestic violence or knows someone who has - that's over half the US population or 157 million people, almost the same number that own cellphones.
Even Missy Elliott has pledged her support for this campaign, and Amnesty International is also on board, with a goal of collecting 100,000 cell phones by the end of summer.
