Eco-Friendly Advice for Traveling Green. TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_2 (illustration: msnbc.com)

SFGate.com offers these tips for staying green on the road:

  • BEFORE YOU GO: Turn down the thermostat & water heater in your home; place a hold on your newspaper delivery.
  • PATRONIZE GREEN TRAVEL PROVIDERS: How can you tell if a hotel, tour company or other travel provider has a genuine commitment to environmental preservation? Have them e-mail a copy of their eco-policy, and see if their catalog is printed on recycled paper. If you're booking a tour, ask if accommodations are at chain hotels or locally owned lodgings. A good place to start is Lonely Planet's Code Green which lists almost 100 eco-friendly trips.
  • REUSE HOTEL TOWELS & SHEETS: Many hotels now change towels & sheets only upon request. If a towel is on the floor, it will be replaced, while those hanging on the rack are left to dry. Leave housekeeping a note stating that you don't need the towels or sheets changed, and ask that the hotel refrain from from using chemical air fresheners and cleaning products in your room.
  • IS YOUR TRIP GREEN...OR GREENWASHED? According to Jim Sano of Geographic Expeditions, many companies present themselves as green when they really are not. Ask outfitters how they select tour operators, whether they support local people, and what they do to minimize impact on the areas they visit.
  • BE ECO-ACTIVE In a new city, travel by bus on on foot.  Walking is not only greener but also opens you to fun encounters. Bike touring, whitewater rafting and kayaking can also be green, depending on the tour operator.
  • BYOT (BRING YOUR OWN TRASH) If you're in a remote area such as the mountains or the desert, bring as little potential trash along, and pack out whatever waste you create.
  • CONSIDER YOUR FOOTPRINT After a day of trekking in the Himalayas, it might be high time for a cold beer and hot shower, but bear in mind that tourist demands can lead to increased deforestation (to heat water) or to the disruption of traditional ways.

Independent Travellers Heading for Southeast Asia Can Travel Lighter with a Downloadable PDF Guide from Travelfish . TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_3 Travel_4 Travel_5 Travel_6

This week, down-and-dirty travel site Travelfish launched their downloadable PDF guide to Ho Chi Minh City, the latest in their growing stable of snappy insider guides, and their first for Vietnam. "We want travellers to navigate their way through Southeast Asia's top destinations without being weighed down by out-of-date guidebooks containing way more information than they need," says Travelfish founder and veteran traveller Stuart McDonald about the concise but comprehensive guides; they print out to A4 size paper before the trip or on-the-go at Internet cafes. "Travellers can simply choose Travelfish guides to the places they are actually going -- each usually costing far less than an airport cab in the city they're travelling to."

While heavy, bulk print guidebooks can take more than six months to reach shelves after a researcher has been on the ground, Travelfish guides are up-to-the-minute. "The writing is on the wall for the legacies [traditional guidebooks]. There is a whole new way of travelling for the latest generation of backpackers -- and flashpackers -- thanks to the internet." says McDonald, who spent years backpacking in Southeast Asia and has now lived in the region for a decade. "Travelfish is at the forefront."

Each Travelfish guide is thoroughly researched on the ground by experienced travellers who do their best to conceal their identity and never accept freebies, to ensure their readers get realistic, warts-and-all reviews of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars and sights:

  • Cambodia: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat with Phnom Penh launching in two weeks
  • Laos: Vientiane, Champasak & more off-the-beaten-track destinations in remote southern Laos
  • Thailand: Ko Phi Phi, Phuket, Bangkok; diver's paradise Ko Tao on the way
  • Coming soon: 24 titles by the end of 2007, including Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon & Central Highlands

Why Not Plan to Travel India by Truck with the Fam this October? TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_3 Travel_4 Travel_5

After a colorful city tour through the labyrinthine streets of Old Delhi and the leafy boulevards of Delhi, venture beyond the hustle & bustle to the Rajasthan Desert for a two-night stay in a village of mud brick cottages; camel  rides through the spectacular desert scenery and village walks in local Rajasthani communities are on the agenda. Next comes a farmstay in the countryside around Jaipur, with a city tour, a traditional evening with music, and an overnight stay in a small Maharajah's palace. Agra follows, with a guided rickshaw ride through sleepy Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, a guided tour of the Taj Mahal and Red Fort, and a visit to the royal city of Fatehpur Sikri. And lastly, head through Uttar Pradesh to the Himalayan foothills and Corbett National Park, where exciting tiger and wildlife safaris by jeep and elephant-back top the itinerary. Conclude the affair with a celebratory Indian feast - with enough chapatis to feed a Maharajah's elephant!

"It's a package we've been working on for some time, and we're very excited about it. We know from the popularity of our African family adventure travel packages that there is real demand for family overland truck based travel that is not as physically demanding but still as memorable as our traditional packages,"  explains Charlie Hopkinson, marketing director at Dragoman Overland. " Having brought true overland truck travel to families visiting Africa (check out our family holidays at Dragoman.com) it's great that we can now offer the culture and wildlife of India to younger people, whilst still using our popular Dragoman Overland trucks."

Dragoman Overland's unique 10-day family adventure tour departs either on October 17th or December 21st. This overland truck adventure is suitable for children aged 7 and upwards. For more info, go to Dragoman.com.

Snazzy Car Design Translates into Hotel Hipness at the Pininfarina-Designed "The Keating" in San Diego. TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_7

Renowned for their sophisticated design of automotive zeniths Ferrari and Maserati, Italian powerhouse Pininfarina has lent its signature clean, ergonomic design aesthetic to The Keating, a newly-opened luxury 35-room boutique hotel in the heart of the centrally-located Gaslamp Quarter. Housed in an historic building, The Keating takes inspiration from the juxtaposition of the intricate façade of the structure and the modern vibe of the city. Snapshots of the building's heritage line the exposed brick walls, while sky blue in the bathrooms and bold red hues in the rest of the space showcase custom-designed mahogany furniture and stainless steel accents in each of the 35 Stanzas (Italian for guestroom).

Forgoing the usual warm and wet zones (bedroom & bathroom), Pininfarina divised a fresher, more open interpretation of space - which is filled with little (and not so little) luxuries & indulgences: in-room spa services, goose down duvet and feather beds, sumptuous Egyptian cotton linens from Frette, a wall-mounted High Definition plasma television and entertainment center experience by Bang and Olufsen, in-room professional LavAzza espresso machines, a customized sip & crave selection bar, plush designer bath robes, and complimentary high speed WiFi Internet access. Personalized in-room check-in and an always on-call lifestyle concierge, available at a moment's notice to respond to any request, only add to the fabulousness.

"The Keating represents everything that San Diego is evolving into," says Edward Kaen, the local real estate developer responsible for hotel. "It combines historical significance with modern design appeal and premier service in a welcoming, urban setting that underscores how vibrant and exciting this city has become. We are incredibly proud to debut such a unique hotel concept here."

Visit Ivory Coast & Ghana in August and Help the Plight of Impoverished West African Cocoa Farmers. TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_2

West African cocoa farmers supply 75% of America’s cocoa, but have never tasted one of its sweetest byproducts, chocolate, in their lives. They can’t afford it. Most West African cocoa farmers live in primitive conditions and abject poverty - mud huts with grass roofing, dirt floors, no plumbing or electricity, no access to anti-malarial drugs or modern healthcare facilities. Even the $10 rubber boots that would protect them from stinging ants or dangerous snakes in the cocoa fields is beyond most workers' reach. Many of the village children work in the cocoa fields and their parents cannot afford to send them to school, and in some cocoa-producing areas, children work as slaves, beaten and kept locked up at night.

"The gross disparity between the suffering of the West African cocoa farmers, their children, and the current chocolate trading practices should give consumers pause for reflection,” says Tom Neuhaus, founder of Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates, Inc., one of a handful of certified Organic and Fair Trade chocolate companies in the US. The company's motto is Do No Harm to the earth or the farmers that supply their product & they offer a 100% guarantee that no unfair treatment of labor or harmful chemicals was used in the production of the cacao used in Sweet Earth chocolate. A portion of Sweet Earth Chocolate Bar sales is donated to Project Hope and Fairness, which Neuhaus founded to assist West African cocoa farmers and advocate for Fair Trade practices in cocoa producing nations. “We need to fight indifference and ignorance and get people on board with conscientious purchasing. Project Hope and Fairness raises awareness of the disparities and advocates for Fair Trade practices.”

To help further raise awareness, Neuhaus - a food science professor at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, California - is organzing a trip from August 8-25, 2007 for 10 unique, adventurous travelers. The group will visit five cocoa farming villages in both Ghana and Ivory Coast, learning about cocoa farming & the history of chocolate, Fair Trade, and helping to better the lives of the impoverished farmers. In past years, proceeds donated from the sale of Sweet Earth chocolate bars and Project Hope and Fairness have helped replace rusted or broken tools, provided farmers with rubber boots to protect their feet from the elements & snakes, and the purchase of new scales that put the villagers in a position of power over middlemen who supply scales that often cheat on weight of product and thus payment to the farmers.  This year, each trip member is being asked to contribute $1000 to support the building of water closets (toilets); many villagers currently use the side of the road at night or the forest during the day, always wary of encounters with snakes or ants. Neuhaus has already kick-started the process by donating $1700 for the sister villages of Depa and Zereguhe where the water closets are now under construction. Plans are underway for water closets in the villages of Pezoan, Broguhe and Batteguedea.

Cannes is Coming (May 16-27), so Now is the Time to Secure a Spot Near the Action. TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel Basking in the glare of the glitterati at the Cannes Film Festival

"Cannes is an important opportunity for European film producers. Getting a film recognized at the Cannes Film Festival can launch a new producer's career almost instantaneously," notes Marcel Stillekens, owner of EuroBookings.com, a Holland-based travel and tourism company offering deep discount rates on hotels in France & other popular European destinations. "And because there has been a mounting interest in recent years in films made outside of Hollywood, Cannes has become a main attraction to film stars around the world." While the actual Festival is reserved only for filmmakers and cinema elite, the buzz spills over into the rest of the city with myriad red carpet events, fabulous boutiques & shopping, and celeb sightings in popular hotel bars such as the Bar des Celebrities.

"If you're not a celebrity, media representative, or a filmmaker, but still want to be close the action, the best way is to secure a hotel in the center of the action," advises Sillekens. "In May 2006 we saw an enormous increase in searches for Cannes hotels in France due to the Cannes film Festival which is getting more and more popular among travelers. There is no such thing as booking too early for Cannes." As the event nears, they have already begun to see a commensurate increase in website traffic and interest in hotels near the festival site, Palais des Festivals, in the upscale Mediterranean city. Although the Ritz Carlton remains the premier hotel & celeb hot spot during the Festival, there are more than 100 others to choose from within the city of Cannes."With an event like this, the location of the hotel will define the overall experience. According to customer reviews from past year's Cannes Film Festival attendees, staying close to the action makes for a much more exciting and enjoyable experience."

Live Vicariously Through Expedition 360 as they Circumnavigate the Globe, Solely by Human Power Alone. TRAVEL SNOB TRAVEL BLOG

Travel_5

Travel_6 All aboard the good pedal boat Moksha.

In a bid to become the first team to circumnavigate the world solely by human power - no sails, hot air balloons, planes, trains or automobiles allowed - the Expedition 360 team has used feet, rollerblades, and most recently, a pedal-boat. They are currently  crossing the Indian Ocean from Mumbai to Djibouti aboard the Moksha,  avoiding pirates, fighting difficult currents, and struggling with water-maker failure. Despite failing equipment, fatigue, and diminishing food supplies, they are entering the final stretch of a 40,000 mile odyssey which began at the Greenwich Meridian in July 1994, a journey so difficult, no one has yet completed it.

In addition to circling the world by means of human power alone, the team has hoped to use the adventure as a classroom-learning tool (their blog is updated daily via satellite phone), encourage world citizenship between cultures, and promote environmental responsibility and to live fully and enjoy the experience. "We're proud to sponsor an expedition that is not only setting records, but also providing an opportunity for educators to use the experience as a teaching tool," says Kevin O'Neal, President of Travel Insurance Services, one of the trip's sponsors. "It's taking adventure travel to the next level."

If Expedition 360 succeeds (hopefully by late summer), their journey will be honored with an entry in the Guinness World Records, ranking with similarly great achievements of early explorers like Magellan and Sir Francis Drake, who circumnavigated by sail.
