Yohji Yamamoto Fall 2007
I've always maintained that fashion holds up a mirror to our inner life, and provides a peek into our collective unconscious. And looking at all the Victorian-inspired volume & ruffles on some of the A-list runways made me wonder why fashions from an era known for obsessive modesty would resonate with today's openly sexual, violent society.
In a guest editorial I penned for the fab Papierdoll.net, I explore the idea that just as Victorian parlor games reveal class unrest to be a central theme in their society, Chris Rock's take on why white people are dead set on preventing everyone else from attaining true weath in order to preserve the status quo reveals similar concerns today.
For a take on fashion that involves more than just a report on hemlines or silhouettes, check out my piece, A Victorian Mood on the Runways on Papierdoll.net.
