FASHIONWEEK Fall 2007: Alexandre Herchcovitch Spins a Tale of Bag Ladies & Beekeepers. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG
Summary: Thank god for Alexandre Herchcovitch - when you have to double-check your show notes to make sure that "industrial garbage bag tunic with space age shoulders over lumberjack plaid shirt" isn't the result of one too many glasses of Riesling from the Wines of Germany booth in the entrance to the runway shows...you know it's a good day for fashion.
New York shows are overwhelmingly commercial and (the dreaded) "wearable"; Herchcovitch, however, is thankfully neither. As the closest thing New York has to the wild creativity of a Paris show or the edginess of London, whether you take to his collections or not, at least he takes risks - irrespective of their wearability quotient. This season involved: bamboo peasant/beekeeper hats (some trailing black chiffon-like netting); industrial garbage bag fabric; flowered cropped jackets that seemed cut from those thick, laminated floral tablecloths at grandma's house; and huge oversized jumpsuits which covered from head-to-toe in the front, until the models strutted by, revealing lots of skin with what resembled chaps from behind (paired, of course, with long scrunched leather gloves).
Color Palette: black; muted earth tones, green with brown; teal & brown plaid; bright florals
Textures & Details: black garbage bag-like fabric; stiff shiny floral fabric; plaids, bamboo beekeeper hats with "mosquito netting"; black elbow length gloves; oversized silhouettes camouflaging any signs of a waistline or shape
Key Looks: sleeveless black garbage bag tunic with exaggerated shoulders layered over a lumberjack plaid shirt; stiff floral cropped motorcycle jacket paired with garbage bag short skirt; beekeeper hats with chiffon netting; black floorlength jumpsuit with cutouts in back (like chaps)
