The Bloodbath at the Newsstands Continues as Newspaper Circulation Continues to Drop, Drop, Drop. FASHIONTRIBES POP CULTURE BLOG
Over the last six months, the tidal wave of red ink washing over the traditional print media continues unabated. Average daily newspaper circulation is down almost 3%, while circulation for the Sunday papers is down 3.4%.
The New York Times helpfully highlights the biggest losers:
- The Los Angeles Times: down 8% for daily circulation and 6% on Sunday
- The Boston Globe (owned by The New York Times Company): 6.7% daily & 10% Sunday
- The New York Times: 3.5% daily & Sunday
- The Washington Post: also 3.5% daily & Sunday
- The Wall Street Journal: less than 2% daily but 6.7% for its Weekend Edition
However, the Financial Times is about to rack up double digit profits of £13m for 2006 (up from £2m for last year) thanks to climbing ad revenues (up 10% for the period). The paper only recently emerged from the red, and its newfound success is attributed to both its global reach and innovations - both in print and online - such as a re-tooled How To Spend It quarterly magazine which accompanies the paper.
