As usual each week, the fabulous Najwa Moses chronicles what's fun, cool & just plain irresistable in the Gotham nightlife scene on her eclectic New York-based videopodcast, The In List, found weekly on Styleaholics.com. The latest show drops Tuesday, August 1 at 10 am NY time, so be sure to check it out to stay on top of the trends. Rumor has it it's boasts similar special effects to an 80s video, so don't miss out on the fun.
Najwa Moses of Styleaholics.com on NYC's Nightlife trends:
- Vintage Mania "I went to Philadelphia this week for an event with the Virgin's Guide, and in addition to getting a Philly Cheese Steak - with Cheesewhiz, thankyou! - I went thrift shopping at the Salvation Army. I couldn't believe it, it was totally crowded with non-fashionista, non-hipster types of normal people. There were moms with kids, 9-to-5 girls, women who normally shop at places like Saks Fifth Avenue - all at Salvation Army like it was part of their regular weekly shopping. And when I came back to New York and went to the Salvation Army here...same thing, as well as at my regular favorite vintage store." Talking to the manager of the thrift store confirmed that business is up amongst the proles - way up. "People are looking at vintage pieces as mainstream. And now that the 80s are back in full swing, we're all looking for more individuality in our clothing. People realize that by buying vintage & recycled clothing, they can get one-of-a-kind pieces without breaking the bank. It's not so much about the label anymore, and more about the individuality."
- Off Kilter Cuts "I've been seeing a lot of asymmetrical cuts in dresses & clothing, necklines that are off-the-shoulder, or perhaps various horizontal slits around the neckline. There is also asymetrical seaming around the hips, where skirts and dresses are draped so that the hip is almost elongated."
- Bandage It The 80s were famous for drop-dead sexy but-you'd-better-have-the-bod-to-pull-it-off Herve Leger "bandage" dresses: short, skintight strips of lycra that hugged every dip & curve, leaving nothing to the imagination. "If you're going to wear a bandage dress, wear it with caution!" warns Naj. "Make sure to find the right one."
- Mix & Match "From light summer wools paired with beautiful tops, to eyecatching tees with some lace thrown in, people are not afraid anymore to wear unusual combinations of fabrics that you might not at first think would go together."
