The Chinook Fund is committed to the transformation of society into one that promotes social justice and freedom from oppression, including but not limited to: racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, and ableism.

In Colorado, a “chinook” is a dry wind that blows down the eastern slope of the Rockies, often bringing a thaw to cold winter weather. In 1987, a group of progressive philanthropists convened to discuss an idea, a Colorado foundation to support activism for peace, human rights and economic justice, and the image of the “chinook” wind took hold.

Today, the Chinook Fund is an alternative philanthropic community foundation for social change, and the effect of the “winds of change” has been felt throughout the entire state of Colorado. From Durango to Yuma, more than 200 grassroots organizations have received well over $1,400,000 in grant awards to further the work of social change.

As we approach our 18th year as a progressive community fund, we have been and continue to be at the forefront of cutting-edge social change issues.  For instance, Chinook was the first foundation in Colorado to openly fund lesbian and gay organizations. Our work continues with grassroots groups throughout the state who address the root causes of social problems such as racism, sexism, homophobia and discrimination against people with disabilities.

Organizationally, the Chinook decision-making bodies are made up of people from various communities who represent different races, genders, faiths, sexual orientations, abilities and income levels. This type of diversity creates a process for us that encourages honest debate, while remaining respectful of people’s perspectives.

At the heart of our progressive philosophy are the exceptional Chinook grantees and their willingness to walk the edge. Social change is a risky endeavor, and grassroots groups who carry out this cutting-edge work are generally small, marginalized and have little or no access to traditional sources of funding.

It is our unique partnership of donors and community activists that enables the Chinook Fund to be dedicated to creating a just and equitable society. We assist those who confront the underlying root causes of social problems rather than provide band-aid solutions. Our efforts challenge and attempt to alter the existing economic and social institutions that don’t reflect democratic principles.
