Even the Non-Old Ladies in Our Midst Occasionally Own Up to Wanting Happy Feet. A Happy Solution: the Kenzie "Billy" Wedges that Are As Comfy as they Are Affordable. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION & SHOE BLOG
Years of towering heels create have left me teetering into back and arch problems. Not to mention a Carrie Bradshaw-worthy collection of pricey stilettos. Any shoe shopping expedition generally ends with me looking longingly at a single, affordable pair and wishing “can’t I just like these for once?”...which then makes me that much more convinced that I should spend the extra $100 to get the pair I really covet.
Price aside, what makes my feet happy? Wedge heels under 4 inches. So when I find a pair of perfection that are comfortable and inexpensive, I get giddy. (That is, after I come to from fainting.) These Kenzie Billy kicks were the hands-down fave from a recent shopping trip, and only $55. What are the chances? And don't fret the "faux" wood - I decided that it translates as "light-as-air". FASHIONTRIBES TIDBIT: Yes, Rock Short Shorts, But Under No Circumstances Pair with Shiny & Sheer Black Panty Hose, Proper Mid-Heel Pumps, or, God Forbid, Both at the Same Time FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG & PODCAST
(From left to right: Chloe, Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Emanuel Ungaro - all Spring 2006 - photos from Style.com)
Now that everyone's wrapped their heads around the return of shorts, the learning curve is underway. On the New York subway, I spotted a fashionista with the best of intentions but major problems with her outfit execution. Her fashion crime? A pair of plaid, rolled up short-shorts paired with office-proper see-through black hose (the kind with a formal sheen) and a mid-heel closed-toe work pump.
Your stay-outta-jail plan: when rocking short shorts - especially the fresh new way with rolled up makeshift cuffs - designers offered a variety of ways to get it right:
- open toe sandals preferably chunky & with a major heel. Good options include neutrals, a tone-on-tone nude or colorful & cheery
- major heels wedges give height with comfort, while a stiletto creates a less cazh vibe
- opaque legwear until the weather warms up, tights are a great option, especially brights & prints. The key: make sure they are beefy and completely opaque. Under no circumstances pair with panty hose or risk the wrath of the fashion police.
- closed-toe Mary Janes good as an option for pairing with tights - otherwise go the open-toed route. Again, never-never-never wear with a closed-toe work pump.

Dr. Sebagh Line of Anti-Aging Skincare Brought to You by a Celeb Cult Doc to Gorgeous Patients like Cindy Crawford. FASHIONTRIBES BEAUTY BLOG
Although small by celeb-doc-eponymous-label standards, the 10-product Dr. Sebagh line is tightly edited because it is treatment-oriented and designed to address specific problems. It was developed by Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh for his well-heeled roster of A-list patients who were already penciling him in regularly for Botox, fillers & exfoliation, and wanted to stay vigilant a casa. The breakout creme is perpetually sold out at Bliss.com, and the Deep Exfoliating Mask visibly improves matters after a single application. 60 Years After She Died, "Suite Francaise" - Two of Five Planned Novels about the Nazi Occupation - Was Discovered by author Irene Nemirovky's Children. FASHIONTRIBES BOOK BLOG
"Celebrated in pre-WWII France for her bestselling fiction, the Jewish Russian-born Némirovsky was shipped to Auschwitz in the summer of 1942, months after this long-lost masterwork was composed. Némirovsky, a convert to Catholicism, began a planned five-novel cycle as Nazi forces overran northern France in 1940. This gripping "suite," collecting the first two unpolished but wondrously literary sections of a work cut short, have surfaced more than six decades after her death. The first, "Storm in June," chronicles the connecting lives of a disparate clutch of Parisians, among them a snobbish author, a venal banker, a noble priest shepherding churlish orphans, a foppish aesthete and a loving lower-class couple, all fleeing city comforts for the chaotic countryside, mere hours ahead of the advancing Germans. The second, "Dolce," set in 1941 in a farming village under German occupation, tells how peasant farmers, their pretty daughters and petit bourgeois collaborationists coexisted with their Nazi rulers. In a workbook entry penned just weeks before her arrest, Némirovsky noted that her goal was to describe "daily life, the emotional life and especially the comedy it provides." This heroic work does just that, by focusing—with compassion and clarity—on individual human dramas." via Publishers Weekly & available at Amazon.com

Overheard in Chicago Thanks to the Fab Editor of Chicago's Own Second City Style. FASHIONTRIBES POP CULTURE BLOG
Overheard by the eagle-eared Lauren Dimet, Editor-in-Chief of Second City Style:
- Guy to his girlfriend: Fanny packs are really making a comeback.
- Twentysomething guy in a tie on his cellphone on the El (Chicago's metro): Anyway, I knew I didn't want to keep this job forever, you know? It's a really conservative firm, and I'm just not a good fit for them. Well, I didn't KNOW they would call the FBI! You can't change the past, you know? You can't change the past. But they called the f***ing FBI! I guess that thing in Florida is on my record. I totally wanted a different job anyway. Mom, what was I supposed to do? You can't change the past, you know?
- Guy on a Ted flight: This plane is Ted? Named after Ted Kennedy? Figures United would put me on a damn liberal plane.
- Security: Hey! That guy looks like Morrissey. I bet he's sad.
- Perfectly round, plump little woman on El, all clad in various tones of red, answers her cellphone: "Hello, this is Cherry..."
- Chipotle employee: What kind of salsa? Mild, medium or hot?
Surly guy: (not sarcastically) Uh, what's spicier? Mild or medium?- Guy: If you came in wearing a fur, I would judge you.
Girl 1: What about a stole?
Girl 2: Or a muff?
Guy: A muff?!?!
Girl 2: Not that muff; the kind you put your hands in.
Guy: You say 'furry muff' and expect me to think of something that you stick your hands in?
- Girl 1: I'm having a really hard time finding an apartment I like. I mean, I went to look at one last night, and apparently somebody had been murdered in there not too long ago!
Girl 2: Hello, this is Chicago! Nearly every apartment has had a murder in it!- College Trixie (see definition below*) on her cell phone: Hi mom. I really need to talk to you. I'm about to have a potentially life changing moment. I'm going downtown to meet Beyonce. To her friends a few minutes later: I brought make-up just in case.
*Definition: Trixie Commonly refers to twentysomething, Jetta-driving, generally vacant, spoiled blonde girls living in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood (they're everywhere). Borders on the pathetic. Usually date day traders who drive 3 series BMWs.

Summer Can be Great on Your Looks but Hard on Hair. Keep Tresses Top Notch with Fredric Fekkai's New "Summer Hair" Line. FASHIONTRIBES BEAUTY BLOG
"I love nothing more than sailing for hours in the sun but, sadly, it can take its toll on the hair," explains the man himself. “That's why I'm thrilled to introduce three fantastic new products to combat the damaging effects of the sun, and keep hair healthy, luxurious, and full of shine all summer long.” The three sun-safe, coconut-scented Summer Hair formulas - with effective ingredients like sunflower seed extract for advanced UV protection, moringa seed extract to condition and protect hair from environmental stress, pollutants and UV damage, bioflavinoids to prolong life of color treatments & cut down on discoloration - help give a gal that “where did she get that?” hair without enduring the harsh effects of the blistering sun.
- Sun Bandana™ Creates sunscreen-like protection for your locks that conditions and strengthens hair while simultaneously protecting strands from the damaging effects of the sun. Apply to damp or dry hair before going out in the sun - the heat activates the “invisible shield” properties of this water-resistant, crème gel formula.
- Beach Waves Spray on damp or dry hair for a tousled, touchable, windswept just-back-from-the-beach look.
- Wash & Wear For a quick refresh and re-style, simply spray on dry hair. The innovative “cleansing magnets” attract and remove dirt build-up on the hair with the stroke of a brush, as oil absorbers lift excess oil, leaving hair refreshed, clean and ready to style. Great for easy re-styling whether you're headed for the beach or to happy hour.

Trendspotting as We Once Knew It is Dead-Dead-Dead. Today's With-It Coolhunter Knows Not to Dub Something Cool...and Other Useful Tips from Grant McCracken. FASHIONTRIBES POP CULTURE BLOG
(Illustration from richborge.com)
According to Grant McCracken of This Blog Sits at the Intersection of Anthropology & Economics (Cultureby.com), trendwatching is more popular than ever...with trendwatching types who like to hold forth, that is. However, the old paradigm ("old" being in internet years, which are similar to dog years) of the coolhunter as arbiter & dispenser of trends is no longer valid. Trendspotters need to stay abreast of the new rules of the game which he lays out in Trendwatching: 10 Rules:
- Its a Team Sport Everything moves so much faster today & through so many channels, it's virtually impossible to catch onto a trend in its early stages all by your lonesome.
- Do it with a Quickness Being the first to identify the next big thing is one of the secrets to trendspotting success.
- Don't Expect it to be Named After You You're not staking your claim - flag in hand - on the new world, so don't exacerbate matters by coining annoying jargon to describe "your" trend, like "inspirence", "gravanity", or "maturialism". Doh.
- Say It's Cool & You Die Just because it's new doesn't make it cool. As McCracken points out: "In my opinion, cool hunters are guilty of a fatal confusion between what they know about the world and what they wish to be true about themselves. They study novelty in order to make themselves more cool." Instead of focusing on being cool, focus on being right. (He even applies his patented "cool hunter detection device" to ferret out the excessively cool.)
- From Whence Did it Appear? It's not enough to say it's new. You've got to explain where it came from if your analysis is to be of use to anyone.
- See Rule #1 Play nice with other trendspotters & websites to identify the "trends across trends". If a trend is occurring in different sectors simultaneously, bingo, you may have just found yourself a bonafide trend.
- What Does It All Mean? From mere observations, move up the trendwatching foodchain and offer insights & conclusions. Warning: requires putting your credibility up for scrutiny.
- Don't Just Sit There, Serve up Your Own Trend McCracken advises trendspotters to take the next step after pattern recognition into idea creation. Generate your own trends.
- Gaze Into Your Crystal Ball Make predictions & then Monday-morning-quarterback as you try and determine where you fell short. Otherwise, trendwatching is essentially a spitting match between the differently-opined.
- Enough Already with the Boasting Instead of shameless self promotion, approach your own PR more like you're a more humble lil' consulting company. What should never see the light of day according to McCracken? "Michael Tchong’s father was born in Canton, China. His family name means “bell” in Chinese. No wonder Michael’s entire career has been focused on making things “clear as a bell.”
