State of the Fashion Union #4: What the Bloggers are Saying. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

The State of the Fashion Union - the Fashion & Lifestyle blogosphere weighs in for Wednesday, February 1, 2006:

Has all the hoopla surrounding Fashionweek got ya scratching your head?  Girl a Whirl gets to the heart of the fashionable frenzy.

As Paper Denim & Cloth plans to launch a more moderately priced jean (under $240) in the fall, this competition in the premium denim market has Denim News applauding...but with caution. As high quality, custom-made denim manufacturers are forced to lower their own prices to compete, will overall construction quality be compromised, causing brand karma to whither?

In the battle of direct response advertising such as Google ad words vs. the fashion "brand" - ie. the image you project of your product - Omiru suggests that branding & direct response advertising will probably meld into a hybrid where shopping search sites will probably expand to become much more lifestyle oriented, but still remain relatively narrow or "vertical" in terms of the actual scope of the offerings.

And on another battlefront, the struggle between fashion vs. style continues. Style Chronicles makes the point that scrambling to lay hands on the season's must-have really says nothing about the person behind the garment except that s/he is under the sway of the dominating influence that fashion marketing can have. To some degree, it's important that fashion stay about individual expression - instead of trendy logos, recognized names, and hefty price tags just for the sake of being hefty, the fashion union should recognize the power of the individual to make their own statement.

Wish you had a fashion crystal ball? You do, explains Kimair: the pre-fall collections that hit the stores right before the fall/winter collections. They collectively act as a starting point of what you'll probably see on the fall runways later in the month. Based on the current pre-fall, expect lots of pencil skirts, fishtail hems, platform shoes and muted, earthy colors such as browns, yellows, pumpkins & bordeaux. eg. lots of grey at Chloe, expect looser tailoring & strongly emphasized waists from YSL, slim suiting and lots of fur from Monsieur Galliano, and a less restrictive A-line silhouette from Lanvin's Alber Elbaz.

Bad fashion happens, especially if you're determined to upstage the likes of Bjork. Spirit Fingers is of the mind that visually unfriendly fashion is, indeed, significant. Her dad's groovy patterned flares caught her mother's attention across the dance floor, and her colleague's predeliction for crushed velour baby doll dresses even helps SF remember the woman's name. She salutes the peeps responsible both for creating "atrocious" fashion & those who venture out in it.

The Fashiontribes gang wonders if New York is simply too commercial to foster creativity, forcing young designers to show too early before they're matured artistically - unlike the European system of apprenticeship where young talent is nutured at an unhurried pace. In a podcast discussion, Lesley & Rachel: ponder who the next Marc Jacobs & Muiccia Prada might be, cringe at the overstyling that comes down the runways, and list the upcoming shows they're most looking forward to seeing.
