One might say that being  a designer is almost a family business for Kasil designer David Lim. His father’s business was a custom tailoring business that catered to the upper echelon.  Through that exposure at such a young age, Lim became aware of the differences in fabric, style and cut to make the perfect custom-tailored suit. Spring board off that family history and  mix in an education in fine arts from a San Francisco  art school and you get David Lim working  back in the “family business” but in an entirely different arena: denim! Given that denim is different from suit fabrics but the art of construction to create a great fitting silhouette is not, Lim created  a denim collection called KASIL which is know for  exceptionally fit, creative use of denim and celebrity awareness of the unique style  that David Lim offers.

1. Top ten picks for the holidays/season for fashion

KASIL JEANS: For Men: casual classics.
For women: old-school glamour, short holiday dresses, killer coats that are flawlessly tailored. Black, black, and black.

2. What is the main trend that you’ve spotted lately? Is it good/bad? Why?

KASIL JEANS: The whole western wear thing.  It can be very classic and hip, and very easily overdone.

3. What is your favorite theme/trend in denim currently? Is there just one?

KASIL JEANS: The denim market is saturated with overdone denim - TOO MUCH.  The market will be gravitating back towards the classics and the flawlessly-fitted perfect jean that can be worn for any occasion.  It’s also moving forward with a closer-fitting jean, and a skinny leg jean as well.

4. How about general trend in fashion?
KASIL JEANS: The West Coast is all about easy California lifestyle, which translates into easy dressing for spring 2006.

5. What is the color palette you are gravitating to for the coming season –spring 2006? what are you adding to the line? More separates? More styles of denim?

KASIL JEANS: Spring always brings in more light washes, which we refer to as Baltic Blue washes, along with some lighter denim and trimming.  The colors for Spring involve a lot of naturals and nudes with fresh hints of de-saturated color. We are bringing in a line of incredibly soft Kasil tees and tanks - great for layering in the southern California weather.

6. What separates you from your competition?

KASIL JEANS: The premium denim market commonly offers quality denim, good fit, and a great wash.  Kasil sets itself above the rest by offering more than those basics.  The Kasil name embodies innovative designs and authentic detailing by infusing art into denim.

8. Where are you going for the holidays?
KASIL JEANS: Snowboarding.

9. What presents are you giving this season?
KASIL JEANS: Gadgets, and denim of course.

11. What’s a fun fact people don’t about you?
KASIL JEANS:  I love Texas. Hold’em, ALL IN.

12. What movies or tv shows do you watch/tivo/rent?
KASIL JEANS: “Pulp Fiction,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and “Clockwork Orange.”

13.  What would you like to tell people about your line
KASIL JEANS: They have this amazing ability to make you look like you’ve been in a kickboxing class for the past 48 hours straight.

14. What inspired you to create a denim line? A fashion line? Any more products or extensions? Any “left turns” in terms of products that you want to develop?

KASIL JEANS: I take inspiration from observing the natural world.  Organic curves and true forms shape the basis for all designs.  Kasil brings a natural look and feel in this sometimes overdone, technology-driven world.  We keep our designs clean, maintain simplicity and believe in subtle details.  Anyone who loves denim will pick up on the fine points and appreciate the workmanship put into Kasil products. Our goal is to offer a customized quality denim product for people who appreciate the particulars.

We are continuing to reinvent and evolve denim’s identity. The challenge to bring something fresh each season is an art form. What we have coming for the following seasons is something that will have to remain veiled. We’ll keep you posted.

15. How would you like people to approach your denim styles?

KASIL JEANS: The Kasil customer base is wide. It includes those who appreciate the most premium of denim, fit, wash, and feel.  Jeans have become the new “uniform” of the world and we want people to experience our comfortable, custom-feel denim.  It does and will immediately become the most coveted piece of anyone’s wardrobe.

16. Describe your personal style.
KASIL JEANS: Cool and casual.  Very basic and grounded.

17. what’s your typical outfit/uniform for work; for relaxation?
KASIL JEANS: Jeans and a t-shirt for both.
