For Day Two of her Black Friday Countdown Blog scrutinizing our culture of consumerism - in the context of the shopping frenzy aka the day after Thanksgiving – Almost Girl (AlmostGirl.Coffeespoons.org) wonders if a small-screen fantasy like Sex and the City has crossed the line for many people from mere entertainment to lifestyle blueprint:  If your wardrobe isn’t a sea of designer names and you’re not out quaffing cocktails at trendy hotspots each night, then you’ve failed at being fabulous. People are pressuring themselves to try to live a lifestyle that has nothing to do with their reality. Unfortunately, orchestrating your life to replicate a fantasy is a guarantee of dashed expectations, massive credit card debt & unhappiness when your own day-to-day doesn’t measure up.

A hard look within might even make some wonder if they should be trying to live that lifestyle at all. AG makes the valid point that fashion should be about expressing yourself and not an end unto itself. If you’re a professional on the move, use fashion to project your competence. A young mom? Wear threads that make your hectic baby-centric life easier (Manolo stiletto mules & gauzy Chloe frocks need not apply). But what if, after a look within, you are a Carrie after all. Then go for it…but make sure you own it. “You know how on boxes of rice or some foodstuff it says “Serving Suggestion” below the picture? I want you to think of fashion and the accompanying messages it projects as just that : a serving suggestion.”
