Vivienne Westood Spring 2006 Collection from Paris fashion Week-Think Active Resistance to Propaganda-Fashiontribes Fashion Blog

As a blog reader, you are probably aware that I am obsessed with Vivienne Westwood.  Which is precisely why this collection was so incredibly disappointing.  Rather than moving forward a vision that she created in the 1970's, as a front-runner in the punk movement, she seemed this season to be hellbent on pushing a message.  So forceful was she, that rather than producing edgy, sophisticated seditious clothing she sent out 1/3 of a collection that was not only lackluster in form, but scrawled with graffiti that caused me to grimace.  Slogans like "I Am Not A Terrorist"  and "AR" (Active Resistance to Propaganda), as well as her formerly used "Branded" Logo didn't really prove captivating, but rather over-the top and pretentious.  The form of the line- high-waisted peg skirts, twisted jackets and vests seemingly allowing for extra fabric out-shined the decoration by miles.

Westwood's abuse of her political theme seems all the more shameful when considering the remainder of the collection.  After she got the 800 pound gorilla off her back, she turned out a series of terrifically cut skirts, dresses, pants and shorts.  The last looks, taffeta numbers that were billowy, twisted and immaculate, were vintage Westwood. Draped, slouchy coats, shorts, and skirts as well as mini-dresses, trussed up and tiny, were fabulous.  However, the entire ordeal seemed to lack the box-freshness that we have come to associate with her. Perhaps she needs to re-focus on what made me fall in love with her in the first place:  a genuine ability to innovate season after season.  I suppose even a maverick like herself deserves slack for what was ultimately a static season.

i think the collection is stunning, i dont think the graffiti was over the top, the mix of prints in combo with it makes it totally hot, loving the colours and yeah the last looks were beautiful. i like the message she is pushing shes a genius.

I don't think it is over the top to push her message, but I don't think it helped achieve a nice look. I think the whole thing could have been done better!
