15 years of a mind-numbing management job will either render you certifiable, or it will force you to finally succumb to what you're really supposed to be doing in this lifetime.
Fortunately, Jessica Kagan Cushman took the latter path...and as the daughter of a famed furniture designer - Vladimir Kagan - and a needlework diva of a mom, she probably didn't have much of a choice.
Having learned the craft of incising intricate designs on whale ivory - an artform known as scrimshaw which was traditionally practiced by sailors on long journeys & usually involved whaling scenes, ships, chicks & scenes copied from magazines of the day - Jessica began creating somewhat more up-to-date scrimshawed antique ivory bracelets that lie somewhere between a tattoo and a bumper sticker. She takes quotes from movies, phrases from literature, and in some cases, New York graffiti creating way cool bracelets that are irresistible. Fun ones include: It's Better to Be Pissed Off, I'll Get You My Pretty & the Fashiontribes fave: Fuck Art, Let's Dance!
A veritable font of artisanal creativity, Jessica also knits like a fiend, creating knitted pendants, charms, necklaces, hair combs & bracelets fashioned from gold, oxidized (blackened) silver, pearls, and semi-precious stones - literally an entirely new type of jewelry. I'm dying to rock the charming skull pendant.
Not surprisingly, Miss Thing is currently studying lace-making techniques in gold and silver chain, and busily embellishing vintage men's raincoats with silk & cotton embroidery after she made one for herself & was accosted on the street with special orders from friends and strangers alike.
