Theater: "All Shook Up" on Broadway - the Elvis Presley musical - is Family Friendly Fun, with Genius Set Design by David Rockwell - Fashiontribes Broadway Theatre PODCAST
The All Shook Up musical on Broadway features the classic music of Elvis. Set in 1955, it's about a small-town girl - a grease-monkey mechanic who can fix any motorcycle - who dreams of riding down the open road. A roustabout with a guitar soon blows into town, and pretty soon, everyone's dancin', fallin' in love, and carryin' on. In the tradition of Shakespeare, girls dress as guys in an attempt to woo a potential lover, girls fall in love with girl-dressed-as-a-guy -- mistaken identity ensues as well as mayhem, and an eventual happy ending.
The set design by David Rockwell is genius. At one point, a delicious Bob Fosse-like dance sequence set to the "Jailhouse Rock" sort of comes out of nowhere, as do these Liberace-meets-Elton-John-in-the-60s leather clad macho guys on bikes - sporting huge angel wings no less - who drop down and hang suspended from the ceiling at one point. Loved!
