Bring On the Smiles! Skip the Normal Part of Life-- Bring on LAFW!! LA STORY Brings You a Bit of PRE-LAFW Humor-- Because WE NEED It! LA Story "Are We There Yet?" Blog and Video

Yes my darlings, it's that time of year again. Now that the award shows are pretty much over (though I know I owe you about 4-5 more podcasts and at least 6 blogs on Oscars. YES, I know I am late but  I promise that  I will get them done.)

We now have LAFW upon us. While you have seen all the hoopla from London, Milan, Paris and NYC.. nothing quite compares with LAFW-- for sure insanity because who else would put think about putting a tee shirt line down the catwalk-- not once but THREE times. Sigh..... We shall save that rant for another blog because it was a real doozy of one  about 6 AM (and if you know me, you know I really am up at that time.)

We have much to share and we will bring you the most succinct coverage on a blog set up just for the FW coverage courtesy of our beloved editor in chief who listens to us bitch, whine and moan, the ever patient, Lesley Scott whom we love and adore and toast with a couple of cocktails (or three or four).

Anyway, please enjoy this theatrical interlude before we immerse you in the lunacy of LAFW, Oscar wrap ups and realize that we my darlings are going to stop taking life so darn seriously. After what we saw pre LAFW in the hoopla of brands  participating and then vanishing from the schedule of LAFW and the rollercoaster ride of not knowing if we are going to be allowed into LAFW because of the cuts made by IMG and Smashbox to the space--well, we are in serious need of levity.. but then I digress.

We need a vacation!! We need to go to Kauai or Key West or someplace WARM with lots of tall icy glasses tinkling with ice and sporting charming little umbrellas or cute little swizzle sticks done as flamingos and us wearing as little as possible in the way of swimwear.

So sit back and share with us this respite of  filmatic composition that should be nominated for best short film for the next Oscars.  If they want to redo it, I will audition for the part of the little girl.

Look for a sassier, less serious take on life and more serious about things that are important-- like chocolate, great drinks, adorable charming men, and fabulous clothing--as well as that perfect___________ (you fill in the blank with your item of choice-- be it fashion, beauty,  food, beverage, cinematic or audiofile/phile). Thank you to the "Goodbye to the Normals" because we are normal no longer- not that we were in the first place.

Blink! It's Keaton Simons Hitting the Concert Trail with Joshua Kelley

1335695362_l

Whether you choose the EP BLINK from Keaton Simons or his double CD, Exes and Whys--featuring the same songs from the EP and a slew of new stuff-- particularly on CD 2.-- you will have something that will either introduce you to this bluesy, jazzy, indie rocker with a mind towards intelligent lyrics richly layered with meaning.  Definitely into the inuendo, metaphor and allegory, Simons is distinctly different and bound to capture your attention -- and maybe your heart-- with his tunes.

If you are looking for the hip hop or dance beat with mindless  nonsensical lyrics and repetitive music, you are in the wrong place. This is music for the drive, for background and for those times when you want something meaningful to listen to-- whether it's the  Without  Your Skin  or the more playful Blink-- there's a layered quality that slowly reveals itself over time.

From the musicality ranging from a more pop-ish sound to the distinctly jazzy/bluesy pieces, the range of his talent is evident in this ability to seamlessly switch from one genre to another.Evaluating on the sheer musical themes (sans lyrics), there's a lot going on. Note that Simons plays virtually every instrument on the cd and you have a talent that isn't common.  It's enough to keep you listening for a good chunk of time-- from synthesizer  to acoustic (Brilliant Blues  which has a studio version on the EP and a LIVE version on the double CD making it worth buying both disks) to pop inflected tunes, there's a treasure chest in the double CD of Exes and Whys.

While I am enamoured with the musicality of his work, the lyrics really reflect a person/persona that is dealing with the Exes (of past relationships) and the Whys (the failure ). What's interesting is that he gives as good as he gets or takes in these relationships and examines the reaons why people hold on--despite the impending and obvious failure that is bearing down on the relationship like a runaway freight train. Willing to stick with it despite the impending doom is a frequent theme. Drive Away offers that sensibility of knowing that the relationship is futile and heading toward the end-- it's all about living in the present tense (often something we don't do) and skipping the futility of the future. Feeling like you are reading pages from a journal or overhearing a  private personal conversation, it's like Keaton has stripped his soul for all to see when it comes to all things personal. Even the revelation  of   Wrong Side of Goodbye is a huge step for a guy  who willingly admits he is a player and been the bearer of  " see ya" because the person isn't right or just he's "not into her". Being on the other side of the "goodbye" (the receiving end), it's obviously a learning situation and he's actually glad to know what the pain is like. Interesting coming from a guy  -- particularly since they aren't usually this emotionally aware and this song tells you just how savvy and "in touch" Simons is with the emotional roller coaster of life. Other songs that are snapshots into his emotional life include Currently, Without Your Skin, and several other tunes are snapshots into his emotional world.

On a broader scale, he's very much aware of his place in the universe and what it means to give as well as take-- both in relationships as well as in  societal/global reference. Everything is an anthem to give-- both as a generousity and in gratitude for all that we have.   Think of it as a call to action to get out there and give back at least a little of what you have been given-- whether it's time, money or both. Do what you can to help change the world and he is saying you can do that.

Love the EP because it's truly the introduction you need to Keaton and once you hear it, you will want the Exes and Whys double disk CD. What's unique is that he has improved and tweaked the stuff from the EP on the Exes and Whys and it's worth having both to just see that situation. The second CD has stuff that I just love. Joseph is a reality check of life and his metaphorical lyrics are insanely gorgeous. The techno-infused Burden of Proof   is definitely worth several repeat listens and actually shows off that sometimes before you commit or get seriously involved maybe you should check out if the other  side has met the burden of proof of interest because too often we jump into things because of our lust/love/emotional compatability and forget that the other person needs to match that or be similar in feeling or tone.   It's an interesting song about the hesitancy of a guy-- or anyone-- embarking on a relationship. Very much a reality check of  the current situation and the sense of impending doom that it's going to die before it really gets started.  His  Brilliant Blue  LIVE version is smokin' hot and I love it as much as I love the studio version-- perhaps more because it's very crisp.   The specific girl related songs are directed to those who have made serious impressions on his life.  Disk 2 is definitely a potpourri of pieces and aspects of his emotional train ride and often transportation/vehicles are allegorical and metaphorical figures in his songs. Also he uses different aspects of homes/houses and structures in his life to describe  the "boxes" that life presents-- a la Just Outside My Window.

What's interesting is that Keaton Simons is evolving and very much open and unafraid of sharing what's going on in his heart, mind and soul. Because he's a guy, that's pretty unusual because  some of the songs indicate his own responsibility for the situation.  While different from James Morrison, there are similarities here that I find in terms of musicality and personal feelings that are real. While Morrison is more straightforward with his lyrics, Simons by nature of his life experiences and education, digs deeper into the situations of life and shares a great deal of who he is.

However don't be fooled into thinking ths is all he is. He's much more than that. This "old soul" has surrounded himself with great people and also is web savvy enough to know how to tap into his grass roots connection.

One of the most interesting parts about Keaton Simons is that he's using the web in ways to reach out to his audience and grow more listeners by using the very tools that most people take for granted but that many musicians seem afraid to use. While videos cost serious dinero to make-- and Keaton has those too -- he takes a step into cyberspace to use LIVE webcasts to touch base with his core listeners as well as conference calls to talk LIVE with people who want to talk to and with him from around the country and the globe. (That's how I first spoke to him-- via the conference call --after several email exchanges). It's a smart,  fast way to reach out to listeners and people seeking the "next hot thing" in music-- and Keaton Simons IS the NEXT HOT THING in music. He's currently on tour with Josh Kelley on the east coast (lucky  you who are on the "right" coast).  If you have an opportunity to get tickets, do so, because it will be an amazing experience.

Be "Under the Influence " of A Musician "UNDISCOVERED" --James Morrison. LA STORY MUSIC Interview Podcast and BLOG!

Cover_undiscovered_300cmyk

James Morrison, is about to make a huge splash in the US. This UK based singer has hit the top of the charts in the UK and sold over 1.6 million copies worldwide to date.  He recently won the "Brit" award for Best Male British Solo Artist (other nominees in the category were Paolo Nutini, Jarvis Cocker, Thom Yorke and Lemar).

800x200_2

Selected to compete in the AOL BREAKERS  "hot new artist", AOL is giving fans a chance to vote for their favorite new artist. With  unlimited voting allowed  along with international voting, this could be the huge "tipping point" for Morrison.

Recently Morrison has performed “You Give Me Something” and “Wonderful World” on Jimmy Kimmel Live on January 30th. Undiscovered was included in Blender’s “2007 Most Anticipated Albums” feature in their January print issue

James will be performing on The Today Show on March 16th -- check out the local listings for time and tune in. Also that same night at SXSW   (read AUSTIN TEXAS and KCRW/AOL event) at 9:30 pm at La Zona Rosa on  3/16/2007/ If you are in Austin and can find tickets to see Morrison,  BUY THEM NOW!! Do NOT wait..  buy them-- whatever the cost. This date will feature a minimalist band and will be a HOT ticket-- and one of those "once in a lifetime" events.

Jamesmorrison

James Morrison's album Undiscovered drops March 13 here in the US!. ORDER NOW!! It's an album that will be burning your ipod and in your car.

Track Listing:
1. Under the Influence--gospel-infused blues/jazz inflected song that's bound to drive you wild

2. You Give Me Something--the anthem of everyone who's afraid of trying something new-- especially in a relationship, recognizing that love might be recognized and found a moment too late. ( here's an audio stream of this song)

http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/interscope/jamesmorrison/undiscovered/audio/96_yougivemesomething.asx

3. Wonderful World-- a personal fave of Morrison and a radically different  presentation. This one can bring tears to your eyes if you hear it at the "wrong moment" ..

4. Pieces Don't Fit Anymore-- breaking up because you finally realize it just doesn't work any longer. GORGEOUSLY melancholy . This will be in a movie August Rush with Robin Williams who tried to convince Morrison to act in the film--which Morrison turned down because music is his life and focus.

5. One Last Chance--  for those who understand that they have screwed up something fierce and must get their act/life/s*** together, this is THE song for you. It's definitely a song to keep you strong.

6. Undiscovered--  title track-- He's not lost, just undiscovered. (This is so my song!)

7. Letter-- we have all been there and had this happen to us. At different times of your life you will identify with this song--whether it's a love affair, work or friendship, it's all about knowing what's inside the letter but not!

8. Call the Police-- call the police, I am so angry, I am about to make you bleed.  This is the song when you need to let  your rage go.

9. This Boy-- Morrison's personal anthem, this is a killer song. It's amazing.

10. If the Rain Must Fall--  gorgeous tune with lots of passion and lyrics

11. Last Goodbye-- the romance ends. The bleeding may continue but the pain is going to stop.

This blues and jazz infused music is something so radically different-- harkens back to the days of late 60's, 70's and 80's with the different r&b vibe and the songs are clear in their vibrancy and theme. Think Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, a young Rod Stewart, the Police  and references to Traffic and  Steve Winwood --even  Clapton--are here.  There is no mistaking his feelings here. Written by Morrison, these songs are genuine reflections of his life at different times and written in that manner. Think of it as a glimpse of the soul of this young man who has experienced a life that might be quite different from yours-- though I do know where he's come from and recognize/appreciate and identify with everything he's experienced.  It's something that Atlantic Records producer and co-founder Jerry Wexler recognized: Morrison has a voice “with its own thumbprint. Hear it once and you’ll forever recognize it.” (As a baby, he had a terrible whooping cough, which may have left him with scarred vocal chords).

Morrison worked his way up from learning the music that he heard as a child, encouraged by an uncle and also just working on the streets singing while he also worked other jobs to support himself. Praise won by hard work and the hard times he experienced as a child is definitely keeping him focused on the target.

Check out the podcast and listen to the  conversation that LA STORY had with James Morrison just last Thursday!

LA STORY gets a chance to talk to musician/singer James Morrison BEFORE he drops his CD in the US!

BBC interview features some interesting tidbits on Morrison as well.

Ok.. I know you want more. Once you hear his stuff on audio. it's as addicting like waving  seriously great chocolate in front of a choco addict. Honestly, as one interviewer said, it's worse than "Lays potato chips because you can't stop till you finish the bag". (personally -- it's cheetos but you get the drift.)  Morrison's music is addictive and you keep on play/repeat/play/repeat because it's one of those CDs that embeds itself into your brain.

Speaking of embeds-- what's an LA STORY music blog without an embed?

Another nifty blip on the James Morrison comes from the tv show, EXTRA!-- via Youtube.com. This is a great piece on how they actually recorded the album and it's truly a group effort here.

MACY GRAY Hits it BIG With Her New CD. Fashiontribes LA STORY Musical Interlude Blog

Mg_feathercover_5x5_1

Macy Gray is back and bigger than before. I was lucky enough to see her live at a private show for her new album BIG which hits stores March 27th. She sang some of my old favorites that include the classic hit I Try, Do Something, and the very real life tale of all women, Why Didn’t You Call Me.

Macygraystanding_1

Macy also gave the audience a taste of her new songs that are sure to top the charts like Finally Made Me Happy and Shoo Be Doo which are currently available on itunes. If you like her other cd’s, you’re sure to like this one too. She collaborated with some major heavyweights that include Fergie and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, Natalie Cole, and Justin Timberlake. Don’t wait, this album is a must-have!

10 HAIR MYTHS REVEALED FROM BEVERLY HILLS HAIR DESIGNER BARRY REITMAN! Fashiontribes LA STORY GORGEOUS" Red Carpet Worthy" HAIR Blog!

We all know the term "bad hair days" and sometimes they stretch on for months and months (Please.. let's NOT go there).  Sometimes we have ignored our hair and it's cries for help (can you hear it screaming at you "save me, save me"?) and sometimes it just gives up and breaks off.  Or maybe you have mistreated it by turning it different colors (ruh-oh.. bad color job) or used the wrong products or tools (oops. I knew I left that flat iron on too long. I could smell the scent of fried hair!)

Barryhead_1

Barry Reitman, a master stylist at Juan Juan Center in Beverly Hills has worked on many a celeb head-- and many more that aren't celebs (including mine!). After 25 years as a stylist, he's fun and fabulous at what he does-which is amazing cuts and color. He's a great "go-to" person when you have a problem. Barry's even better if you keep him as your regular stylist. Who better to ask about hair problems than "the master", Barry Reitman.

LA STORY presented Barry wtih several "myths" or suggestions or problems and asked for his opinion and what to do about it.  Here are the questions-- and straight answers that we got from Barry!

I heard that...

Coloring my hair can cause cancer?
"The Food and Drug Administration has found no direct link to hair dye. Hair dye is not a major public health concern."

Prescription drugs affect the condition of my hair?
"Some commonly prescribed prescription drugs can cause temporary hair loss, trigger the onset of male and female pattern baldness, and even cause permanent hair loss."

My hair grows faster in summer months?
"There are many people who swear their hair grows faster in the summer. The rate of hair growth is unique for each individual and is totally independent of weather or climate conditions. Hair length generally grows up to 1/2 inch per month no matter the month."

I shouldn't color my hair when pregnant?
"It is always recommended you consult first with your physician."

Split ends can be repaired?
"Split ends cannot be repaired and should be cut off immediately or they will split even higher and cause further damage."

Stress can affect my hair's condition?
"A sudden or stressful event can cause the hair follicles to prematurely stop growing and enter into a dormant phase. The hair will then stay in this phase for about 3 months after which time a large amount of hair can sometimes shed. In most cases the hair loss is temporary and the hair will soon recover."

When growing out my hair longer, I should get it cut more often? "When letting your hair grow longer, having regular haircuts will remove split ends and keep the hair looking thick and full at the bottom."

Shampooing my hair daily will dry it out?
"The right shampoo for your hair type and texture will actually add moisture, body and luster to your hair.  The key is to finding the correct shampoo designed for your hair."

FYI:  Check out the Juan Beverly Hills line of shampoos, conditoners and treatments-- also Barry has another podcast on the Beauty Buzz Blog that talks about deep conditoning too.

http://fashiontribes.typepad.com/beautybuzz/2006/07/get_the_best_tr.html

I need to change shampoos and conditioners often?
"Many people swear that their hair will become immune to the benefits of the same shampoo used over time.  There is no scientific evidence to prove this myth."

I can use lemon juice to lighten my hair?
"Never use lemon juice to lighten hair. If it does anything at all it will make your hair turn orange in color. Also it will dry the hair out and leave it brittle."

Now there are more questions to ask! Feel free to email them to me at stevie@fashiontribes.com and I will create a blog or podcast that answers those questions. However refer to the podcast above for some deep conditioner recommendations and the common misconceptions that people have about hair listed above that Barry has addressed.

If you check out the product recommendations he makes on the podcast and  treatment suggestions here, your hair will be beau-tee-full in nothing flat.  (and it won't be flat either-just lush, beautiful hair!)

What's the hottest brand in denim right now? Proportionofblu!
Want to know what it's all about and why YOU need to buy a pair?
lListen in to Terrell Wicks discuss all about the and the PROPORTIONOFBLU's "golden ratio" .. it's really unique.

PHI is a number. it's a golden ratio-- and while it might not be the easiest concept to understand, it's definitely a part of YOUR life and part of the culture of the world from ancient times of Egypt and Greece to modern America.

The Golden Ratio was first expressed by the ancient Greek philosopher Euclid over two thousand years ago. This ratio is referred to as PHI (pronounced: fee) and is expressed mathematically as 1:1.618 (continuing on into infinity and never repeating). This ratio is found throughout nature and has been recognized as a fundamental component of all things that man has found aesthetically pleasing.

Recognizing the inherently pleasing nature of things “in the ratio”, man has employed the Golden Ratio throughout time in some of the most remarkable and inspiring achievements.

Parthenon

These include the Parthenon in Greece,

Pyramid

the ancient Pyramids in Egypt, DaVinci’s “Mona Lisa” and Stradivarius’ Violins.

Violins

Even greater than these achievements are the naturally occurring examples of things “in the ratio” such as the graceful curves of the Nautilus shell,

Sunflower

the patterns within a sunflower, the position of the stars in the heavens and the shape of our own DNA.

Katemoss_1

Want to know more about  PHI or the Golden Ration ? Where would one find it? Here's what Terrell gave us as examples.

50+ short Golden Proportion facts and bite sized thoughts

1. The Golden Ratio not only looks better, it sounds better. That’s why some manufacturers use it in the construction of audio components.
