It's a taste that is rarely duplicated here in the US and typically not well-- till now when you have Deb Schneider giving you the step by step hints, tips and ingredients to put together not only the most killer tacos but the most incredible recipes for an amazing BAJA style menu.
YUM is all I can say. It made me want to COOK-- and trust me that's no easy feat these day.

She covers categories like:

  • Street Food
  • Cooking from the Coast
  • Nueva Cocina (new kitchen) in the wine country
  • Foods from farms and gardens (think veggies and closer to home. chicken!)
  • Sweets and drinks (see the flan recipe below)
  • Baja basics.

This book includes the secret sauce for those amazing fish tacos, terrific salsa recipes and tons more things that are EASILY prepared.

Available at Amazon.com

All I can say is YUMMY!! I love Baja style cooking!

Want a taste test? Here's a pretty easy to do recipe for a cheese-cake like flan that's to die for.
Cream Cheese Flan with Orange Sage Honey

Traditional flan is a heavy combination of sweetened condensed milk, eggs, and runny caramel. I much prefer this version, which despite the name is more like a light delicious cheesecake. The finished, chilled flans will pop right out of nonstick muffin pans or a soft silicone mold, or you can bake and serve in 6-ounce porcelain ramekins. Sara Polczynski developed the basic recipe, which I have adapted.

Makes 10 individual flans.

Orange Honey Syrup

1⁄2 cup mesquite honey or other dark honey (see note below)

1 fresh sage leaf

1 large orange

Flan

1 pound cream cheese

7 large eggs

2 cups sweetened condensed milk

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Fresh berries or peaches (optional)

Make the syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the honey and sage. Remove long strips of zest from the orange with a vegetable peeler and add to the honey (reserve the rest of the orange for another use). Place over medium-low heat until warm. Let steep, off the heat, for several hours or overnight. Remove and discard the zest and sage.

Make the flan: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Set 10 (6-ounce) straight-sided soufflé dishes in a roasting pan just large enough to hold them.

In a blender, combine the cream cheese, eggs, condensed milk, milk, and vanilla; process until very smooth. Divide the mixture evenly among the dishes.

Pour hot water into the roasting pan until it comes halfway up the sides of the dishes.

Bake the flans for 40 to 50 minutes, or until they are no longer liquid, feel barely firm in the center, and jiggle only slightly when moved. Remove from the water bath, cool, and chill.

If you wish to turn out the flans, hold a dessert plate firmly over each mold and quickly turn upside down. Drizzle the tops with the honey and garnish with the fruit.

Note: The flan may be baked in one large dish, instead of individually. Increase the baking time to 1 1⁄2 hours. Agave syrup (available at health food stores) may be substituted for the honey. The syrup is agave sap boiled down to a honey-like consistency, with a unique, gently herby flavor.

Freedom Writers Hits DVD.. LA STORY Blog -- and Discussion

Freedom Writers is  the story of Erin Gruwell, a high school teacher in Long Beach, California, who encouraged her class of "at-risk"  students to overcome the gangs that divided them and the educational system that failed them. She encouraged them  to tell their stories in their own words via   journals.  The journals the students wrote  ultimately became the book The Freedom Writers Diary

The film features an outstanding cast of young actors, many of whom grew up surrounded by gang violence and were able to draw upon their own experiences on the street to portray Gruwell’s students with gritty authenticity. The movie also stars  Oscar winner Hilary Swank and  Grey's Anatomy Mc Dreamy, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Glenn (Training Day) and Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix). This DVD is from Paramount Home Entertainment and can be found on Amazon and all major DVD retailers.

The FREEDOM WRITERS DVD includes feature-length commentary with director/writer Richard LaGravenese and Hilary Swank, deleted scenes, “Making ‘A Dream’”, “Freedom Writers Family”, “Freedom Writers: The Story Behind The Story” and a photo gallery.

Check out my personal take on this movie and it's presentation as it has played with the parents, teachers and students at the "hypothetical" school in Long Beach, Calif on which Freedom Writers is based. This was posted on Mediabistro's FishbowlLA Blog.

A couple of things to note: there is busing of students across the entire Long Beach Unified School District. A student can CHOOSE which school they go to-- either local or distant-- in the district. This "hypothetical" high school is  in the upper income area of the city which has both   low income areas, a diverse population of Asians, Latinos, and African Americans who live in all areas of this third largest city in the state of California.  While these students were feeling marginalized at that time, the entire Southern California region was feeling marginalized and fractionalized because of the riots that hit many areas -including Long Beach-- quite hard.  While everyone needed to take a step back and reassess their personal situation as well as the one in the population in general, please don't accept the idea that this woman was the ONLY teacher in the entire district of 5 high schools of 4 thousand plus students at each school to reach out to their students. To do so would be to show disrespect to some amazing teachers at ALL the schools across the Southern California region-- not just Long Beach.

Bring On the Smiles! Skip the Normal Part of Life-- Bring on LAFW!! LA STORY Brings You a Bit of PRE-LAFW Humor-- Because WE NEED It! LA Story "Are We There Yet?" Blog and Video

Yes my darlings, it's that time of year again. Now that the award shows are pretty much over (though I know I owe you about 4-5 more podcasts and at least 6 blogs on Oscars. YES, I know I am late but  I promise that  I will get them done.)

We now have LAFW upon us. While you have seen all the hoopla from London, Milan, Paris and NYC.. nothing quite compares with LAFW-- for sure insanity because who else would put think about putting a tee shirt line down the catwalk-- not once but THREE times. Sigh..... We shall save that rant for another blog because it was a real doozy of one  about 6 AM (and if you know me, you know I really am up at that time.)

We have much to share and we will bring you the most succinct coverage on a blog set up just for the FW coverage courtesy of our beloved editor in chief who listens to us bitch, whine and moan, the ever patient, Lesley Scott whom we love and adore and toast with a couple of cocktails (or three or four).

Anyway, please enjoy this theatrical interlude before we immerse you in the lunacy of LAFW, Oscar wrap ups and realize that we my darlings are going to stop taking life so darn seriously. After what we saw pre LAFW in the hoopla of brands  participating and then vanishing from the schedule of LAFW and the rollercoaster ride of not knowing if we are going to be allowed into LAFW because of the cuts made by IMG and Smashbox to the space--well, we are in serious need of levity.. but then I digress.

We need a vacation!! We need to go to Kauai or Key West or someplace WARM with lots of tall icy glasses tinkling with ice and sporting charming little umbrellas or cute little swizzle sticks done as flamingos and us wearing as little as possible in the way of swimwear.

So sit back and share with us this respite of  filmatic composition that should be nominated for best short film for the next Oscars.  If they want to redo it, I will audition for the part of the little girl.

Look for a sassier, less serious take on life and more serious about things that are important-- like chocolate, great drinks, adorable charming men, and fabulous clothing--as well as that perfect___________ (you fill in the blank with your item of choice-- be it fashion, beauty,  food, beverage, cinematic or audiofile/phile). Thank you to the "Goodbye to the Normals" because we are normal no longer- not that we were in the first place.

UNKNOWN on DVD--- How UNKNOWN Can It BE? Check it OUT! LA STORY MOVIE REVIEW Blog

3dboxart

"Unknown” might be as unfamiliar a title to you as it was to me.  Originally released on November 1st, 2006 theatrically, it largely went unnoticed in limited release, but it’s worth a look the next time you’re searching for a DVD rental at your local Blockbuster.

It is a taut psychological thriller about five men who wake up to find themselves locked in a warehouse with no memory of who they are or why they are there.  They quickly deduce that at least two of them are innocent kidnap victims—which means that the others would be the hostages.  But who is on what team?  It soon becomes a race against time to figure out who is a “bad guy” and who is a “good guy” as they work to escape their situation.

Take one part “Memento” (this flick features a supporting performance by Joe Pantoliano), a dash of “Identity” and a touch of “The Usual Suspects” and you have a pretty engrossing tale.  Also starring Jim Caviezel  (“The Passion of the Christ”), Barry Pepper (“Saving Private Ryan”), Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Jeremy Sisto (“Six Feet Under”) all giving solid performances—although Caviezel and Pepper stand out as two men not knowing who to trust—but deciding to trust each other, regardless of which team they were originally on.  For the most part, the 85 minute long film is tense and gripping.  It does have a tendency to drag in some spots—but the audience is working as hard as the characters to figure out who the “bad guys” are.  Throw in a couple of neat reversals (and perhaps one plot twist too many) and you have a nifty jigsaw puzzle of a mystery.

I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars—definitely worth renting.  Along with an intriguing set-up, solid performances and twisty plot, the movie is a nice tribute to what can be done with a small budget (only $3.7 million) and a smart idea.

Stella Says! A Review of The Good Shepard! Fashiontribes Now What Movie Should I Go See Blog?

Thegoodshepherdonesheet

The GOOD SHEPARD is more than good, actually—it’s great!
Not to be confused with “The Good German” starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett--who played Brad Pitt’s wife in “Babel” while Brad Pitt’s real-life partner, Angelina Jolie plays Matt Damon’s wife in “The Good Shepherd.”  And of course, Matt and George and Brad are currently filming “Ocean’s Thirteen” with Steven Soderbergh who directed “The Good German.”  And Matt is also currently appearing in “The Departed” with Leonardo DiCaprio, who was originally cast to play the lead in “The Good Shepherd.”  Hollywood is amazingly incestuous, isn’t it? ( Can you keep that all straight and repeat it fast without stopping three times in a row?)

“The Good Shepherd” features an amazing cast—Matt Damon, William Hurt, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, Billy Crudup, Angelina Jolie, John Turturro, Joe Pesci, Timothy Hutton—the list goes on and on.  As does the movie, clocking in at two hours and forty-eight minutes.  And that’s WITHOUT the seventy-seven previews they typically run beforehand.  Make sure you hit the bathroom before the movie starts and skip the super-sized soda.  The movie is long, but is an entirely engrossing look at the birth of the C.I.A.—as told through the story of one of its operatives.

Williamhurt

It is a story of trust and secrets, loyalty and betrayal, real lies and created truths.  Centered around the failed Bay of Pigs operation in 1961, the film spirals back to 1939 and traces the beginnings of the Agency through Edward Wilson’s (Matt Damon) induction into this clandestine lifestyle, intermittently flashing forward to unravel the mystery of how the covert operation to overthrow Fidel Castro was breached.  The attention to detail—from the clean-cut, horn-rimmed look Damon sports, to the dank, cavernous hallways and fluorescent lighting gives a great sense of verisimilitude.  The process of deconstructing a fuzzy piece of film footage and audiotape to obtain clues that will locate the internal leak is painstaking and precise—even before the advent of widespread computer technology.

Mattdamon

Matt Damon does an excellent job at portraying Wilson—a Poetry student at Yale, who was invited into the secret Skull and Bones society and eventually recruited for the O.S.S.—the precursor to the C.I.A.  Interestingly enough, this trajectory is similar to a well-known political figure—former President George Bush (father of our current President) who headed the agency in the mid 70s.  Wilson is depicted as a patriot and true believer who dedicates his entire life to “protecting” America—but who loses his soul, and his family, in the process.  His taciturn and discreet manner make him an excellent agent—but inspire frustration in his wife Margaret (Angelina Jolie) and fear in his son Edward Jr. (Eddie Redmayne).

In fact, fear is a running theme in the film—the paranoia that escalated into the Cold War between the USA and the USSR created the C.I.A.  And in the post 9/11 era, the very same fear continues to feed and sustain its existence.  The fear and betrayal portrayed in “The Good Shepherd,” however, is not as much between the USA (a.k.a. “The Good Guys”) and the USSR (“The Bad Guys”) but internally within the agency.  Wilson learns early on that no one is to be trusted—no one can be trusted.  How ironic that among all his colleagues and cohorts, who ultimately double-cross or disappoint, the only man true to his word is his KGB adversary—known as “Ulysses.”

Angieandmatt

It’s not surprising that this film had an epic, “Godfather”-like feel to me—it was meticulously directed by Robert De Niro, and featured Francis Ford Coppola as one of the producers.   Adding to the film’s esteemed pedigree, the screenplay is by Eric Roth, who also wrote “Forrest Gump,” “Munich,” “Ali” and “The Horse Whisperer.”  With only two weeks until the end of the year, the studios are unleashing Oscar-worthy films upon us—and “The Good Shepherd” certainly holds its own in this crowd.   A captivating look at life undercover.

From Flab to FAB!! Getting Back Into the Fitness Groove! Fashiontribes LA Story FITNESS Blog

It’s easy to get derailed from your regular fitness routine during the stressful, time-crunched, commitment-overload holiday season. Who has time to hit the gym for an hour four or five days a week when you have gifts to buy, gifts to wrap, places to go, people to see, trees to decorate, etc. You must prioritize if you want to make it through the holiday season without having a nervous breakdown; for many women, prioritizing means putting their fitness routine on the back burner in an effort to save sanity. The problem is, these reasonable and sane women risk entering the New Year in their fat-day pants. No, it’s not a thrilling thought to start the New Year with a new layer of body fat.

Book_1

The solution is not to ditch your workout all together but rather find a more time-efficient, effective workout that you can realistically squeeze into the holiday madness. Even the busiest of busy can fit a 30-minute “stay at home” workout into their schedule three days a week. The trick to making the workout effective (and not just time-efficient) is to incorporate a mix of exercise training techniques that can increase EPOC (excess post exercise oxygen consumption) which amplifies the “after-burn”, stimulates the mitochondria within muscle cells to burn more fat, burns lots of calories and increases lean muscle mass to elevate the resting metabolic rate.

In the workout routine outlined in The Fitter, Firmer, Faster Program: Get a Killer Body without Killing Yourself (HCI Books, December 2006) the following nine exercise techniques are used to burn three times more fat than aerobic exercise and to help you get your best body in the least amount of time----without ever leaving your house! Incorporate these training tips into your exercise routine and you’ll be entering the New Year in your skinny jeans.

Flys

  • Go super-slow periodically.  Super-slow resistance training is one of the safest, fastest ways to build strength and boost metabolism at the same time.  Emphasizing the slow, downward (eccentric) phase of each exercise builds strength fast because this training technique recruits more muscle fibers per movement as compared with lifting and lowering your weights at a more rapid tempo.
  • Go for Intensity.  Exercising six days a week for an hour at a time is not necessarily the best way to get in shape.  It’s much better to focus on quality verse quantity.  You’ll achieve far better results training intensely for 30 minutes, 3 days a week compared to going slow and steady for an hour six days a week.  A short but intense workout helps you gain more muscle and burn more calories not only during your workout, but also after your workout via EPOC (excess post exercise oxygen consumption).  The more oxygen you train your body to consume, the more calories you will burn at rest; working out hard by incorporating high intensity aerobic-type intervals into your resistance training circuit is the most time-efficient way to boost your body’s ability to consume more oxygen and therefore burn more calories.  Studies show you can reap significantly greater fat loss and significantly more metabolism-boosting muscle gain by performing short high-intensity workouts as opposed to longer-duration, lower intensity workouts.
  • Jump rope. Rope jumping is intense exercise. It’s also a safe and low-impact exercise if done with proper form. Plus, it’s one of the few aerobic activities that can be done in the house with a very inexpensive apparatus. You can burn two and a half times the amount of calories jumping rope as you would burn doing brisk walking or stationary biking. Jumping rope increases your cardiovascular strength, improves your endurance, and tones both your upper and lower body simultaneously. Incorporate five 2-minute jump rope intervals into a 30-minute full-body workout and you’ll blast fat and burn mega calories.
  • Focus on major muscles.  On a percentage basis, your chest, back, and legs are the biggest muscle groups in your body.  Focusing the majority of the time you spend exercising on these muscle groups will give you the most bang for your efforts and allow you to reshape your body in the least possible amount of time.  Exercises involving your chest, back, and legs burn a lot of calories but more importantly, exercising these major muscles results in the greatest possible increase in your basal metabolism.  Try to think in percentage terms.  If you increase your strength in your back by 25 percent, that’s going to have a much greater effect on your basal metabolism than increasing the strength in your right bicep muscle by 25 percent.
  • Incorporate compound movements.  Compound exercise movements work multiple muscle groups simultaneously to maximize efficiency.  By doing compound movements you can work smaller muscle groups such as your biceps while working larger muscles such as your thigh muscles at the same time.  An example of a compound exercise is a leg lunge with a bicep curl.  If you really want to get fit in the least amount of time, it’s best to avoid smaller muscle isolation exercises such as tricep extensions unless you’re doing them in conjunction with an exercise that works big muscles such as a squat.  Certain exercises work multiple muscle groups by their very nature.  For example, pushups work your chest muscles, your shoulder muscles, and your triceps concurrently and are therefore highly effective and highly efficient.  Compound movements elevate your heart rate, burn lots of calories, strengthen your cardiovascular system, and rapidly build metabolically active lean muscle.
  • Incorporate high repetition training.  Most exercise trainers advise moderate repetition training for general fitness.  “Moderate” means perhaps ten to fifteen repetitions of each exercise motion.  While this is indeed a good rule of thumb we also support high repetition training, perhaps 20, or even 30 repetitions for some exercises to improve fitness and optimize fat loss.  High repetition training stimulates the mitochondria within your muscle cells, helping increase their ability to process oxygen, and helping increase your body’s fat-burning capacity.
  • Perform peripheral action heart training.  Peripheral action heart training is a resistance training technique that conditions your cardiovascular system while simultaneously strengthening major muscles.  By alternating between upper and lower body exercises your heart is forced to work extra hard to pump blood continuously to opposite ends of your body.  For example, you might perform an exercise for your chest then move immediately to an exercise focusing on your lower body before going back to your upper body for your next exercise.
  • Work your core.  Core training exercises tone the “core” muscles of your hips, back, and abdomen.  Exercising these muscles helps stabilize your spine and improves your posture.  When you train your core muscles, you bring better alignment to the joints in your spine, warding off back pain and preventing low back injury.  Core training also allows you to achieve the flattest abdomen possible because when you strengthen the muscles in your lower back, your entire midsection is pulled inward.  Finally, training the deep muscles in your abdomen helps your entire body feel noticeably firmer and look significantly trimmer.  The Fitter, Firmer, Faster workout includes a number of different exercises for the core muscles of your hips, back, and abdomen, including balancing poses that force your core muscles to work hard at keeping you upright.
  • Do just one set.  “Sets” refer to the number of times you perform a specified number of repetitions of one exercise before moving on to do a completely different exercise.  For example, if you do 15 push-ups, then rest for 30 seconds, then do 15 more push-ups, then rest for 30 seconds, then do 15 more push-ups, you have completed three "sets" of push-ups.  Performing three sets of each exercise is fairly common in the world of weight training.  However, one set is sufficient to gain strength or maintain strength so long as you are exercising your muscles to fatigue.  One set routines allow you to reach up to 80 percent or so of your genetic strength potential, which is perfectly fine if your goal is general fitness.  It is true competitive athletes in training for sports requiring optimal physical strength can benefit from performing multiple sets.  The downside, of course, is performing multiple sets of each exercise substantially increases the length of time you spend exercising.  Unless you are an athlete in training, stick with one set to get Fitter, Firmer, Faster!

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction and being able to  transform that "truth" into  fiction a la writing a book, is something to be applauded and something I have to investigate. Little did I know that colleague and friend, Lauren Lipton would be the subject of a pitch from a PR firm about her book, "It's About Your Husband"  from WARNER BOOKS.

What's great about Lauren is that she's always been a girly girl. C'mon, if you had to slot her into a Fashion-tribe, she would be a combo between the Downtown Doll and the Global Chic with a distinct pinch of Fancy Flirt in her.  Want to know some of her inside tips --which is what her heroine in the book learns about (the hard way, no less)? Ode to my iPod

So you might be thinking—what does a $200 piece of fad technology have to do with living simply?  Plenty.  Let me tell you why.Ecaplma133lla

I am a gym rat.  Yoga three times a week.  Cardio and weights three times a week.  When I get on that elliptical fitness trainer to sweat for an hour, I need more motivation than being able to squeeze into my designer jeans to carry me through.  I need music!

Larger_ipod

Before my iPod, I had a portable CD player.  Relatively big and bulky to my nano, which is the size of a credit card.  I made up about twenty mixed CDs, which I rotated.  You’d be surprised how quickly twenty CDs get old.  So you have big, bulky, portable CD player, twenty CDs, case to hold CDs, CD burner, CD cleaner, batteries for CD player… See?  Not so simple.

With my iPod, you can create playlists using iTunes—no more burning CDs, no more storing CDs!  Simple.  Or at least simpler.  I have developed a new passion for creating workout playlists.  It’s actually an art form in my mind.  Remember the days of the mixed tape?  This is so much better.

Black_ipod_1

Sure you can pick out a dozen or so songs that you like and create a nice motivating rhythm for your workout.  But I like to take it one step further.  I create my playlists using “themes”—a basic idea or concept that ties all the songs together.  For example, instead of “One Hit Wonders” (which would actually be a great theme for a playlist!), I have a playlist called “One Word Wonders.”  All the song titles are one word.  Like “Change” by Lisa Stansfield, “Breathe” by Anna Nalick, “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks and “Panama” by Van Halen.  I have another playlist with the theme of “Time” with songs like “All this Time” by Sting, “The Waiting” by Tom Petty, “One Week” by Bare-Naked Ladies and “Better Days” by the Goo Goo Dolls.

I recently created a playlist with an L.A. theme with songs like “California Love” by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre, “Hollywood” by Madonna, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” by Good Charlotte and “The Entertainer” by Billy Joel.  The possibilities are endless to use your creativity to make a playlist that’s sure to keep your blood pumping through a tough workout—or even just keep you going through a tough day.  And what could be simpler than that?

According to  Kathryn Finney (shown above),

In early 2003, we created a blog called "The Budget Fashionista", with the goal of helping the world (and myself) be fabulous for less. I've become an expert on issues like shopping, fashion trends, blogging, fashion advice for REAL women, and the use of Jedi mind tricks to reduce credit card interest rates. The popularity of my blog led to a book (How to Be a Budget Fashionista), which led to television (NBC's Today Show, Fox, CNN, and numerous family movies), which will hopefully lead to a fashionable but debt-free life.

Finney will be making  personal appearances  across the country, telling  you how to be fabulous for MUCH less!

New York, Hartford, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, DC throughout the month of June.

This is one cool book that is a MUST HAVE for every fashionista in training- particularly those who don't like paying the price tags that they see in department stores or want to maximize their fashion dollars.  I even learned a few things and I certainly needed to know how to UNSHRINK a cashmere sweater!!

Thanks Kathryn for the tips!!

GET the book.. you won't be sorry!

That's the LA Budget Fashionista Story
