A Chic Q&A with Celeb Aesthetician Angela Caglia Whose Facial Following includes Helena Christensen & Daphne Guinness

Picture 6While studying French at the Sorbonne, Cali native Angela Caglia fell in love with that particular passion of finely-complected French filles, skin care. "I was mesmerized by the elegance and tradition of French women caring for themselves and their beauty rituals," she recalls. Enough so that she returned to Paris to study & work alongside a well-known French esthetician. She later landed stateside, where she's spent the past 16 years tending to many an A-list complexion & is now in collaboration to start her own line of skin care goodness.

FASHIONTRIBES: As an aesthetician in Los Angeles, what is the most common skin issue you encounter?

ANGELA CAGLIA: The most common is sun damage. I also see a lot of clogged pores which comes from their active lifestyles; lately, I have many women in their thirties starting to break out for the first times in their lives. I treat with LED light therapy, peels & extractions. Because skin is a barometer for many things in ones life, especially health, I focus on educating my clients on how to care for their skin and make any necessary lifestyle changes.

FT: Such as?
AC: Wear sunscreen every day - SPF 30 or higher. For night: use peptides, retinoids & night serums.

Picture 7FT: If you can only get one treatment per month which should it be?
AC: Hydra facial treatment. It is good for all skin types, even sensitive. It exfoliates and deep cleanses the pores and refines texture while plumping your skin up with hydration!

FT: Typical day for you?
AC: Wake up, coffee, check emails, read my flipboard articles on my iPad then get ready for gym. Then I grab a green drink & head to work; I usually have between 7 to 9 clients a day. I come home to a glass of wine and make dinner with my boyfriend.

 Best...

...eye cream? Anything with caffeine in it. It's perfect to stimulate circulation under the eyes for puffiness and dark circles. I like one by a cult favorite line called 100 percent pure. It's all natural and made in Napa and it costs around 20.00.

...Los Angeles Day Spa? Ole Henriksen Body Spa

Picture 8...food for your skin? Salmon. It's filled with omega oils and my skin is glowing the next day. I am making it tonight for dinner too with steamed broccoli. Also, berries and nuts are fantastic.

...local resource for beauty products? Sunset Plaza Beauty Boutique. They hand-pick some of the best beauty products.

...part of the your job? Making my clients look ten years younger!

...lunch spot? Chateau Marmont on the patio.

...regimen for great skin? Wash your face, moisturize it, protect with sunscreen. Every day. Also, get monthly facials.

...Los Angeles based skincare line? I love Glamglow. It's a Hollywood-vibe packaged mask. One of my clients started the line a few years ago. The mask exfoliates and brightens. It has won best beauty mask for two years at Neiman Marcus.

... skin care on a budget? Ole Henriksen products are affordable; they are all under $45 so they're not really expensive like other lines. For a drugstore brand, I like Salma Hayek's line of skincare for CVS.

A Short but Chic Chat with a Fashion Insider: Barbara Adler, Jewelry Designer & Model

Barbara adler model jewelry designerIs Barbara Adler a model-slash-designer or more of a designer-slash-model? Regardless, whenever the hyphenated Angeleno isn't working her magic in front of the camera, she usually can be found putting in long days on her eponymous line of jewelry. Currently, her Cali-casual chic collection features a bumper crop of really cute & diamond-festooned monkeys & bananas. Bananas also loom large in her personal life as the wife of music industry exec Cisco Adler of Bananabeat Records.

Modeling & designing...how do you do juggle both?

It's not easy and it's 24/7. I'm either working 10 hours on set or working on my jewelry line 10-12 hours. I don't know what to expect day to day. I keep a schedule and check off everything from my list day to day to keep organized; fortunately, I love challenges and multitasking. My friends call me Superwoman.

Barbara adler jewelry jewellery gold monkey bananaModels get to travel all the time. What do you consider your most inspiring or awakening moments?

Skydiving in Mexico. Stepping off the train into Paris. Watching the sunrise in Hawaii. Riding on a speedboat at sunset from one island to another in Palau. Meeting my husband in New York.

Please tell us your favorite...

...local place to eat? Sugarfish. It's simple, affordable & delicious.

...boutique? Fred Segal.

...L.A. based designer? Jeremy Scott

...jewelry designer? Loree Rodkin

...model? Kate Moss

...go-to beauty product? Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Picture 88As a working model, what is your secret to great skin?

At night before I go to sleep, I make sure I wash all my makeup off. But mostly I focus on maintaining my skin from the inside by drinking a lot of water and eating clean, especially whenever I get booked on a big beauty photoshoot.

And lastly, can you dish on what we can look forward to with your new jewelry collection?

Old Hollywood. It's a surprise!

An Oil Cleanser that's Tough on Makeup, Not your Face

Picture 38

Picture 39NUDE Skincare is the holistic, complexion-friendly brainchild of Ali Hewson (aka Mrs. Bono) and Bryan Meehan, founder of the UK's Fresh & Wild chain of natural & organic food-stores.

While the notion of topical nutrition for your skin is new, the principle on which their cult-fave Perfect Cleansing Oil is based isn't. Just ask your flawlessly-complected grandma, who is always right about everying, including the fact that when you're cleaning your face, the best way to keep it glowing is using like against like - as in banishing oily residues from your pores with oil. NUDE's is of course free of mineral oils and sulphates and although it's tough on the toughest waterproof makeup, it's loaded with natural botanically-based plant oils which leave your skin, soft, supple & instead of any awful tightness - comfortable.

How to use: Pump 2-3 times & spread onto dry skin. Use some warm water to create a lovely, soothing milk - it's good for removing eye makeup, too - & then rinse it off by gently splashing your face. And remember - as with all NUDE products, a little goes a long way.

Laser Hair Removal: A Modern Solution to an Ancient Beauty Dilemma

Picture 26Shaving is such a snooze. And waxing? What a drag (literally). But if you want to be bare (rather than mistaken for one) what is the alternative?

High-tech beauty has now developed to the point where it's possible to get the same results you would in a doctor's office but at home and for a fraction of the price by doing it yourself with a home laser hair removal system.

So how does it work? Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target the dark pigments in hair which then readily absorbs the heat and, in turn, inflames the hair follicles and their ability to produce new hair during the next growth cycle. And with each successive application of the laser, the hair grows thinner with less discomfort from treatment - which is prickly and kind of like having a rubber band snapped against your skin. Gradually, the hair is removed for good. While results can start to become visible after two treatments when you can expect up to a 70% reduction in hair growth, after 2-3 months, hair will appear lighter & finer and after six treatments over six months, the results can be permanent.

Which begs the question: what will you do with all the shower time you've liberated not to mention money saved on endless razors and/or pricey waxing appointments?

For Spring Break or Resort Fun in the Sun, Cover Up Safely & Stylishly

Picture 31

Picture 32There's only so much sunscreen you can possibly pile on without feeling (and looking) like a giant oil slick. Which is hardly the way to get your sexy Beach Bunny on. However, the alternative, clothing that incorporates sun-protection...most make burkas look like the height of chic.  Recognizing an unfulfilled niche at the crossroads of Style & SPF, the former style director of Vogue, Alexandra Kotur - currently Creative Director at Town & Country - and a former federal prosecutor & mom to three, Tiffany Moller, teamed up on a new luxe line of innovative, sun-protective resortwear.

The Parasol collection is comprised of body-con swim dresses, skirts, sarongs, cardigans & sun shirts - all lightweight and with the right amount of stretch, luxuriously soft & quick drying, and under Kotur's creative direction, stylish as well. Most importantly, the Italian stretch knit fabric used affords a physical barrier against 95% of the sun's harmful rays. "It's truly the smartest style under the sun," they add.

To support melanoma research, Parasol is donating $1 for every new "Like" on their FB Parasol Page - Facebook.com/parasolsun - to the Melanoma Research Alliance.

Parasol ranges in price from $85 to just under $300 at ParasolSun.com.

Skincare Memoirs of a Geisha

Picture 57

"For over 300 years, Japan’s geisha have been held in awe for their enduring wisdom and breathtakingly beautiful, porcelain skin," says Victoria Tsai of TATCHA, the skincare company she founded to give those of us outside this secret sisterhood equal access to their flawless complexions. "Perfected through centuries of timeless rituals," adds Tsai, "it was widely believed these beauty secrets had been passed down from one generation of geisha to the next by word of mouth alone."

Not quite.

Picture 58

Picture 59A 200 year-old manuscript written in the twilight of the country's Edo Period, the "Capital Beauty and Style Handbook", detailed over 150 skincare ingredients and a variety of rituals which Tsai and her team of scientists - along with some help from scholars and geisha themselves - deciphered, distilling them down to an elegant four-part regimen of cleansing, exfoliating, treating & moisturizing that is centered around three key antioxidants: green tea (ryokucha), red algae (Okinawa kaiso) and rice bran (komenuka).

"What we uncovered is the very foundation of Eastern skincare and beauty," says Tsai. "TATCHA’s all-natural formulas pay homage to the icon of Eastern beauty and our own storied heritage."
