How to Wear Gold Smoking Slippers This Spring & Summer

Picture 63
Picture 64One of my fave trends hands down....all the way down to my grateful feet is the smoking slipper. This fabulous footwear has been making shoe shopping fun again. For years, I was a heels-uber-alles kinda girl, but no longer - and really, there aren't many occasions in life when flats aren't perfectly fine. But not just any flats. Cute isn't optional. Neither is quality. Charles Philip Shanghai makes these by hand, padding the sole and lining the interior for comfort. I also love the gold finish because that means there's not much in the closet they won't go with. Here, I paired them with some breezy wide-leg pants in a cotton stripe - 'cuz stripes and prints just look so cute & cheery with touches of brights, neons & metallics.

GET THE LOOK: trousers - Marni; tee - James Perse; necklace - Emilio Pucci; straw fedora - Maison Michel Virginie; bag - Gucci; shoes - Charles Philip Shanghai (all via Net-a-Porter.com)

A Sweet Summer Style Treat

Picture 2

This year, the must-have-don't-leave-your-house-without-it shoe is the pointy white pump. It can be kitteny in height or it can be skyscraper'y; it can be shiny patent leather or soft matte lambskin; it can be cheap or it can be spendy.  What it isn't is optional.  Here's a fun way to wear it with coordinating icy-cool accessories and a sassy sundress the shade of a sugary sorbet.

GET THE LOOK: sundress - Anna Sui; leather biker - Acne; pumps - Reiss; earrings - Marni; sunnies - Alexander Wang; lip gloss - Dolce & Gabbana

Peter Pilotto, Sandal God.

Picture 52The recent surge in popularity of all things artisanal (yummm....bread), small batch (fitness, anyone?) and the custom-made (like a personalized, print-on-demand exoskeleton) reflects a social pattern more fundamental than what is, in essence, various ways to monogram your stuff, your activies, your life. Rather, we're all suck of being spun by big brands - straight into the poorhouse, the hospital, possibly an early grave. They promise all the things they promise during the Superbowl, in the print glossies, at giant music festivals, but what you end up buying is often shoddy, produced on the backs of exploited labor & most worrisome: actually dangerous to your health.

The backlash, of course, is to buy locally, choose handmade over mass produced & $upport stuff crafted by folks you trust. The experts at the Color Association of the United States, CAUS, have dubbed this Against the Grain. However, in honor of this amaze crafty-yet-cool beaded-rope stiletto which is, of course, sold out...but a girl can still dream, so I promptly renamed it: Against the Odds.

Win a Chic Straw Envelope Clutch from Celtic & Co.

Picture 116

Picture 118As a new Brand Ambassadrix for Celtic & Co., which specializes in cute stuff at chic prices, they recently sent me this very Nicole-Richie'ish pair of fringed mocs & leather-trimmed straw envelope bag - which can do triple-duty as a clutch, a shoulder bag or a case (right).  I decided to style my new acquisitions with some denim shorts to help get in the summer groove and a leather topper - which is the perfect piece of outerwear for navigating the tricky spring temperature highs & lows. Plus, the neutral hue nicely highlights the earth tones of my new shoes & bag.

Of which one could soon be yours!

How? Leave the most interesting comment on this FB post - or better yet, build your own snazzy ensemble using stuff from Celtic - which you think best shows off the bag. Best outfit wins the $150 bag. I'll pick a winner on Friday, May 3!

(Everything in the outfit is available at CelticAndCo.com.)

This Wedding Season, Here's How to Kick Up Your Heels

Wedding shoe

There's the menu, the music, the honeymoon (duh!) & of course, the sartorial star of the show, the D-R-E-S-S. But when planning your Big Day, be sure the big ticket items don't inadvertently cause you to overlook what kind of style statement you plan on making below the ankles. Your choice in fab footwear says a lot about your personal taste, your standards for style and even your attention to detail. Whether you prefer strutting your stuff in stilettos, getting your Audrey Hepburn on in ballet flats or going beachy-peachy caszh in cute flip flops, before your final dress fitting, decide on your shoes because what you have on your feet will make a big difference in the way your gown drapes & flows. (illustration)

Picture 55

Pump it Up!

1. The Dos Noeud by Christian Louboutin not only has the requisite red sole, but a feminine bow as well to add a delicate touch to your ankle. The towering heel guarantees you'll look long & lean.

2. If you want a little glitter to help you glide down the aisle, the Jimmy Choo Kendall delivers in sparkly spades. The only drawback is that it's a tad spendy...as in a budget-busting $2,995.

3. With a charming silver feather adorning an otherwise traditional white satin pump, this delightful number by Manolo Blahnik is perfect for any wedding-day swans.

4. White satin certainly makes it easy to stay classic, but that doesn't have to mean boring. The Badgley Mischka Aria keeps the focus on everything but your feet, but completes the look with style and grace. The collection also plays with tulle and chiffon, bringing a little bit of girlish fun to your feet for the big day, including the fact that you can easily coordinate your bridal party with similar shoes in any hue.

Picture 56

SANDAL SAVVY

5. Instead of pumps, maybe you're thinking sandals. The attention-grabbing Tabitha Simmons Chandelier Crystal Sandal ties in back with an ornate white satin bow, leaving the front of your foot draped in enough crystals and sparkle to (almost) rival the shine on your ring finger.

6. Another dazzling bling option is the Jimmy Choo Melody, which sparkles aplenty but also gives your feet oodles of much-deserved breathing room.

7. Brides who want to feel like Cinderella can do no better than the Benjamin Adams collection of glass-slipper styles including heels, flats, wedges and slings. Each is glittery and gorgeous and the collection is one of the more budget-friendly lines for wedding couture.

Super Cute Clarks To Put Some *Spring* in Your Step

Picture 164

Ever since the 1950 Chicago Shoe Fair where Nathan Clark launched his signature Desert Boot crafted out of rough suede from Cairo's fabled Old Bazaar, the Clarks brand has been known for comfort built on styles influenced by footwear favored by off-duty Eighth Army officer (the Deserts) & Sioux moccasins (the Wallabee). They tend to transcend the trends...striding right over 'em in naturally shock-absorbent crepe soles & sturdy suede still sourced in the north of England from the Charles F. Stead tannery. But woman cannot live by her Wallabees alone, which is why I was so psyched to see what cute offerings they have in the way of womens shoes for the new season. A sorbet of rainbow-pretty hues and if I had to choose one, I would go right for the yummy suede pump. Such a perfect way to add some stylish juice to dark skinnies, a denim pencil skirt or even khakis (coral + khaki = tasty combo). If I could choose two, it would be the magenta suede wedge. And three? The cream oxford/blucher would add just the right touch of menswear chic to my life.

When in (Wardrobe) Doubt, Make Like Jackie O

Picture 125

Even though I never had the pleasure of meeting her in person, Jackie regularly swoops in to assist whenever my inner sartorialist is in a bit of a shizzle. Just before the inevitable "I have NOTHING to wear" meltdown erupts, I breathe and remember to ask myself: WWJW?  Well, Jackie would defintely wear these awesome equestrian "Rosemont" boots by Lacoste which Designer Studio Inc. generously sent my way.

Picture 127The sartorial spirit of Mrs. O gave these these an immediate thumbs up & told me to tell you that an equestrian ensemble would show them off to best advantage. Here, I paired them with DKNY tuxedo skinnies, a short-sleeve blouse from MiH Jeans, a Margiela chartreuse cardi & matching Burberry scarf tied jauntily on a Bottega bag & finished the outfit off with Monica Vinader earrings.

The boots are a rich, go-with-everything dark brown, plus there is none of the weird gapping you sometimes get with tall boots thanks to the long elasticized panel on the back. Which is also great if your issue is just the opposite & you usually can't find boots roomy enough to accommodate your calves; this stretch panel is your new BFF. I do want to mention something important about the sizing: their American sizing doesn't correspond in the normal way to Euro sizing. I wear a 37.5 in Euro which is generally always a 7.5. In the Lacoste, it's considered a 6.5. So go by your Euro size when you go to order yourself a pair. Which you should really do. Like, now.

Or, you could enter my fun giveaway. I have a pair that will fit a US size 9. Tell me how you would rock them - leave your comment HERE on the Fashiontribes FB page -  & I'll select the winner this Friday, April 5th. Good luck!

Cute Floral Slingback Pumps & What to Wear With Them to Give 'em Some Edge

Picture 71

Picture 72As a brand ambassador for Aerosoles, I recently received these on-trend fresh 'n floral "Cheer Up" slingbacks. Sure, you could rock 'em with a skirt but sometimes it's more fun to take a walk on the spicy side o' life. How? With a cropped leather pant, nautical-stripe slouch sweater & bold accessories.

Postmodern Inspiration for Thoroughly Modern Multitasking Footwear

Picture 26

Picture 27"I am personally interested in designs that go beyond the existing framework and form," explains Youngwon Kim, a recent MA graduate in shoe design from Cordwainers at the London College of Fashion - whose fiendishly fabulous graduate project involved creating shoes with interchangeable heels & uppers, meaning tons of shoe options without tons of closet space required.  "The concept of this collection can be referred to the broad notion of postmodernism," Kim continues.

Me? I would probably refer to it more along the lines of "really clever."
