Of Bottega Boxes, Abstract Artists and Skies & Beyond

Picture 147

Picture 148

Bottega Veneta has once again collaborated with NYC-based artist Nancy Lorenz, known for her Japanese-inflected Post-War abstraction, on a series of 25 boxes crafted from leather and suede - each one-of-a-kind and an extension of the brand's tradition of blending the artisanal with the artistic. The lids in the "Skies and Beyond" collection, in particular, are fabulous: inlaid with mother of pearl, they are polished to a high shine designed to feature cracks and other natural markings on the raw materials used, which include white gold, blackened silver, palladium and moon gold leaf.  Measuring 28x20x10.5 cm, the boxes are just the right size to keep small treasures close at hand such as letter, photos &  jewelry. "I've always followed Nancy Lorenz's work and felt the time was right for us to introduce this long awaited third collection," adds Bottega's Creative Director Tomas Maier. "I appreciate her refined technique, textural work and overall artistic sensibility, and am delighted to work with her again on this unique project."

Kaiser Karl Kollaborates with Cassina on Sexy Snaps of Fine Furniture

Picture 26For 85 years, Cassina has been designing innovative furniture and along the way, collaborating with the likes of Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret, Franco Albini, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gio Ponti, Vico Magistretti, Philippe Starck and Gaetano Pesce.

Their latest: Lagerfeld & his photographic eye.

His original photo "interpretations" of his selections from Cassina will be on display at the Cassina showroom in Paris through March 10, 2013. "Karl Lagerfeld's authentic eye enhances the singular characteristics of the Cassina products," notes Gianluca Armento, Brand Director of Cassina. "Each photograph emphasizes a silhouette, the elegance of particular finishes, the luxury of a detail and the seduction of the materials."

Ah...only in Italy do construction materials "seduce" which is why we're so head over Loubies about the culture.

Sex, Drugs & Cabriole Legs. What's Not to Love?

Picture 30

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Mutoid Waste Company drove a convoy of lorries to an ex-Soviet munitions dump in the old East Germany, hoisted two MiG fighters and three tanks onto low loaders and trucked them to the no-man's land in front of the shell-riddled Reichstag. There, the tails of the MiGs were jacked into the air and the tanks were fashioned into an arch, the sides painted in neon-graffiti readiness for a giant one-night rave. And then dismantled right afterward. The industrious artist responsible for Tank Henge was Joe Rush, part of a generation of British scrap designers who typically launched their careers putting on illegal parties.

Picture 31

Like Tom Dixon and his band, Funkapolitan, who were behind London's first hip hop club, the Language Lab, located ...in a strip club. Once the girls finish their set, Dixon and singer Nick Jones would load the PA into the tiny elevator. "Every night was pyrotechnics," reminisces Jones. "Loads of people turned up. Boy George, Tim Westwood, Spandau Ballet, all these people were saying what is this kind of music? What’s going on?" When the crowd outgrew the space, the party moved, pirate-style, to London's industrial deadlands where the sparks flew. Literally. Cars were cut up, the crash of the fuel-spewing wrecks providing the evening's light show. And it was these demolition derbies which ignited the idea to weld scrap metal into furniture. "We came up with this idea of buying one tonne of scrap, dropping it in the gallery and welding it in the window until the exhibition was opened at the end of the week," adds Dixon.

Picture 33

From illegal parties in the North Venice bus depot to the Venice Biennale, the Notting Hill Carnival, a gig at Manchester’s Hacienda & even a stop at Buckingham Palace to collect an OBE for services to design, these bits of broken Britain have since morphed into fabulous furniture, collected by the likes of Mick Jagger, Mario Testino, Paul Smith, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood & Jean-Paul Gaultier. And a book homage: *Cut & Shut: the History of Creative Salvage* - the first of this caliber to cover the art of crafting furniture from found-items, including interviews with Ron Arad, Mark Brazier-Jones, Tom Dixon, André Dubreuil & Joe Rush; plus an archive of previously unpublished images & a cover designed by Ben Kelly. "It started with a hip hop night in a Soho strip club," notes co-author & furniture collector Nick Wright who penned Cut & Shut with Gareth Williams, Head of Contemporary Art and Design at the fine-art auction house Bonhams. "The sampled furniture which followed was welded under the influence of a 'Camberwell carrot'** and, like the backbeat to the narrative, became a metaphor for a generation of Londoners defining themselves by their diversity. It was sex, drugs and cabriole legs."

Picture 32

Cut & Shut launches at Bonhams on December 3, 2012 & is available at Amazon.com.

- Lesley Scott

**From one of the best cult-movies. Ever. Withnail and I!

Picture 34Danny the Dealer: "The joint I am about to roll requires a craftsman and can utilize up to twelve spliffs. It is called a Camberwell carrot."

Marwood: "It's impossible to use 12 papers on one joint."

Danny: "It is impossible to roll a Camberwell Carrot with anything less."

Withnail: "Who says it's a Camberwell carrot?"

Danny: "I do. I invented it in Camberwell and it's shaped like a carrot."

The Color Purple Makes a Splash on the Spring 2013 Runways! But Why Wait? Here's How to Incorporate *African Violet* into Your Life. N-O-W.

Chanel quartzThe fashion colors for Spring 2013 reveal an overwhelming "desire for self-expression, balance and the need to re-energize," according to the color-trend experts at Pantone. "The expression 'balancing act' is something we all relate to as we strive to find harmony in the frantic pace of our everyday lives," adds Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "The same can be said for fashion as we look for balance between light and bright, classic and new. This season's color palette emphasizes this need for balance, while at the same time allowing for individuality, self-expression and excitement."

Pantone african violet purple 16-3520One of the really interesting choices is exotic AFRICAN VIOLET (Pantone 16-3520), a statement color that introduces intrigue  - characteristic of the color purple. "Purple is very complex,” continues Eiseman. "It's not a straightforward primary color like red, blue or yellow. You mix two colors to get it, so instantaneously there are opposing feelings. It’s the calmness of blue, with the excitement and dynamism of red." The thrill of negotiating this very knife-edge is probably why this hue "is often chosen by very creative people, or those who are just a bit different.”

Picture 44This shade already made a chic splash during the Fall 2012 Fashion Week at the ode to Mother Nature & her way with crystals that was the Chanel runway. "Nature's the greatest designer," notes Herr Pulse-of-the-Zeitgeist Karl Lagerfeld, who, like many designers, is once again finding inspiration in the great outdoors. "These shapes are millions of years old." Particularly ethereal & lovely was the amethyst-hued crystal Chanel clutch PLUS accessories are such an easy way to incorporate this mystical hue into your wardrobe.

The word itself, purple, is of ancient Greek descent (porphura, from which came the Latin purpura) and named for the snail - found on the shores of Tyre in what is now Lebanon (Phoenicia) which was made from the mucus secreted by a snail. So costly to produce, it was worn only by the extremely wealthy and became known as imperial purple. Heads of State from Alexander the Great to Egyptian kings wore Tyrian purple, as did Roman Senators, trimming their white togas with a strip of purple. (Even today in the casinos in Nevada, the $5000 poker chips come in purple.)

Picture 45Purple in both its full-strength and more muted current variation, violet, are believed to have a calming influence and are also associated with imagination, dreams & the future. (The third-eye chakra is said to be violet.) "Both contain the energy and strength of red with the spirituality and integrity of blue," explains Judy Scott-Kemmis, an expert in the psychology of color & co-author of *The Colour of Sex*. "This is the union of body and soul creating a balance between our physical and our spiritual energies. Purple or violet assists those who seek the meaning of life and spiritual fulfillment - it expands our awareness, connecting us to a higher consciousness. For this reason it is associated with transformation of the soul and the philosophers of the world are often attracted to it...Violet encourages creative pursuits and seeks inspiration and originality through its creative endeavors. It likes to be unique, individual and independent, not one of the crowd. Artists, musicians, writers, poets and psychics are all inspired by violet and its magic and mystery." (image)

Even if you're not inclined to step out in head-to-toe violet ...or perhaps the amazing Chanel quartz-clutch is a lil' outside (as in *somewhere-in-outer-space* outside) your budget this season, there are still lot of fun, different - and easy! - ways to add the intrigue and drama of African Violet to your look. A great place to start is the runway...why Chanel of course:

Have a Seat! It's by Marni.

Picture 14

For this year's Salone del Mobile - the prestigious furniture & design fair held annually in Milan - Marni will present a collection of 100 chairs made in Columbia by ex-prisoners as part of a project to resettle them and integrate them back into society. The style of chair is a common sight in most Columbian homes and has been re-interpreted by Marni in a modified weave and a variety of innovative colorways.

Picture 15The chairs also provide a background for a series of portraits shot by photographer & filmmaker Francesco Jodice, "L'Arte del Ritratto", and will be featured on Marni's e-mag, ANTICAMERA2.  Funds raised from the sale of the chairs will be sale donated to the institute ICAM of Milan - a project which allows children of imprisoned mothers to spend their youth in a family environment.

Kaiser Karl to Bring that Lagerfeld Look to the Biennale des Antiquaires 2012

Picture 16

Since 1962, the Syndicat National des Antiquaires has hosted the Biennale in the Beaux-Arts Grand Palais in Paris, featuring enough top-shelf art and antiquities exhibitors to attract A-listers adding to their A-list collections, including museum curators - from institutions like the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty, the Art Institute of Chicago and the New York Public Library - interior architects and Picture 20decorators such as Jacques Grange, Jean-Michel Wilmotte & François-Joseph Graf.

The presentation is appropriately lavish, with hundreds of artisans, plasterers, carpenters, cabinetmakers, carpet layers, lighting experts, welders, painters and florists working tirelessly to prepare an escapist fantasy fit for the Saudi princesses, assorted European royalty and newly-minted gazillionaires from China, Egypt, Turkey & Russia who jet in for a little browsing & shopping in "booths" (if you can call them that) designed by creative visionaries such as Jacques Grange and Peter Marino costing in excess of $125,000.

This year, the fair is - for the first time - being expanded within the Grand Palais. Following years of renovation, the famed Salon d’Honneur wing is finally being re-opened, increasing the number of exhibitors from 86 (in 2010) to 150. $50 billion worth of Archaeological treasures will be on display - including arms and armor, furniture, paintings, drawings, graphic works, sculpture, books and illuminated manuscripts, tapestries, rugs, objects d'art, coins and medals, stamps & ceramics. Prestigious fine jewelry will also be available to eye & buy from Wallace Chan (right), Chaumet, Bulgari and Boucheron, all exhibited alongside Piaget, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston, Cartier and Christian Dior.

As the largest Biennale to date - more than 100,000 visitors are expected to view this treasure trove of exceptional works spanning 1000 years and six continents - it was only appropriate that the designer be larger-than-life.  "This era is different, I wanted to evoke, not reconstitute," notes this year's Sultan of Scenography. "The intended effect is “that the visitor immediately feels enveloped by the atmosphere as soon as he enters the Grand Palais."

Picture 17

WHERE: Avenue Winston Churchill, Paris 8eme arrondissement
