For the Spring 2013 Pantone Fashion Palette, Designers Serve up a Fruit Salad of Color

Green is the *new green* for Spring 2013, with Tender Shoots announcing the first signs of the season in a beautiful yellow-gree hue, with subtle shadings of hushed Grayed Jade & light/airy Linen and not-so-subtle splashes of lively Sophisticated Emerald. Exotic African Violet brings a touch of intrigue to the palette and versatility - given the way purples lend themselves to so many different & unexpected combinations - such as Poppy Red, Nectarine, or Lemon Zest.  And at the end of this tutti-frutti colored day, Dusk Blue gives way to inky Monaco Blue.

In other words, Fashion's spring season strongly resembles the one designed by Mother Nature.

According to the color experts at Pantone, this dynamic - yet harmonious - palette represents a similar tension in our own lives as we back away from extremes in favor of renewal and self-expression. "The expression 'balancing act' is something we all relate to as we strive to find harmony in the frantic pace of our everyday lives," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "The same can be said for fashion as we look for balance between light and bright, classic and new. This season's color palette emphasizes this need for balance, while at the same time allowing for individuality, self-expression and excitement."

As an aside, with this laser-like focus on harmony, renewal and all things green...including the fact the lead-off sketch in the Pantone Color Report was a vibrant emerald green (a Tracy Reese sketch - scroll down), can we maybe make a lil' prediction about the Color of the Year for 2013? Tangerine trees & marmalade skies ... they bring back memories of the wildly-expressive and botanically-nicknamed Flower Children of the 60s, which inspired Peter Som. The "signature" hue of his Spring '13 collection was muted jade green. "It’s a new pastel that has strength," he explains about the soft & dreamy shade. "The world has enough challenges to keep us pretty busy - a little time to dream is OK." Rachel Roy similarly went the dream/green route, but gravitated toward a brighter, more chartreuse  version (Tender Shoots) because of its element of surprise: "The emotional experience of an unexpected dreamland — a world where a whimsical feminine spirit toys with the idea of punk couture, creating ultimate freedom where fantasy becomes a modern reality." (Translation: a capsleeve jacket with a peplum waist in a groovy shade of limeai & worn with everything you own.) "Everyone is sick of hearing about the bad conditions globally, the economy, etc.," adds David Meister, who advises cheering things up by wearing brights, brights & more brights (perhaps a little sumpin' sumpin' in his signature Tangerine shade for spring?). "Fashion should be uplifting and make people feel good and smile."

Shoes of Prey Stalk the Fashion Week Runways for Spring 2013

Bespoke footwear brand Shoes of Prey - which makes custom-made footwear available to the rest of us - has teamed up with some fresh new fash talent for NYFW.

Mandy Coon, Jonathan Simkhai & Gretchen Jones all worked closely with the shoe brand, from initial sketch on through to final production of the collaboration, which will be officially unveiled during the spring shows.

First Kaiser Karl, Now alice + olivia. Fashion Insiders Give Magnum Ice Cream Bars Some Big Love

Lagerfeld & Rachel Bilson teamed up on a series of fun shorts which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival to help launch the super-premium ice cream brand stateside. And now, the big treat proves you can't be too teensy or chic with the smaller version of its velvety-vanilla ice cream bars covered in Belgian chocolate - which inspired some sassy skirts of the same length by Stacey Bendet of alice + olivia.  “Inspiration is like ice cream: it always makes you smile," says Bendet of the skirts, one made with power mesh base & embellished with sequins & chains, the other a beaded & sequin-festooned silk & lace confection. "The MAGNUM Mini is the perfect inspiration for a mini skirt, playful and sweet!"

The skirts will make their official (and, no doubt, delicious) catwalk debut at the alice + olivia Spring 2013 presentation during NY Fashion Week.

It strolled nonchalantly down the F/W '11/'12 runway as the second look out at the Gucci menswear show - which kicked off the fashionable festivities marking the 90th anniversary of the house. To celebrate, Frida Giannini channeled Gucci's jetsetting heyday with signature 70s high-glam rockstar. Um, yes please.

I love the size of this, the fact it's a mini briefcase-meets-a-clutch, the color, the fabrication, the color, the size...the everything.

Resort 2013: the Ferragamo Forecast Looks Leisurely, Laid Back & Luxe

Held at the Louvre in Paris, Ferragamo is the first italian house to be allowed to use the Denon wing as a catwalk to showcase their lady of leisure who is in search of eternal summer - be it the serene Big Sur coastline of Cali, a small sunny isle in the Mediterranean, or in fact anywhere that nature unfolds theatrically into precarious cliffs and wild rocks. And what should such a sun-loving free spirit wear? Why rocker-chic leather in neutral hues of peach, champagne & bisque, linen-jersey tees piped with leather or a suede blouson, and all with a boyish jacket tossed on as if an afterthought.

"I wanted it to be about richness and craftsmanship," explains creative director, Massilmiliano Giornetti. "It's Slow Fashion, which is not just about precious materials, but also the time that goes into each piece."  Referring to Ferragmo's sponsoring of the museum's blockbuster "Saint Anne, Leonardo da Vinci’s Ultimate Masterpiece" which showcases his unfinished masterpiece from c. 1510, Massilmiliano adds: "It's about the old masters, but with a young spin."

Translation: their signature weaves (threads knotted entirely by hand) and exotic fabrications got sexed up as a nude-croc mini, 3D crochet, flat suede boots with studded embroidery, skin peeking through a labyrinth of patchwork, fringe & lacing. "This unique interweaving of modern vision and traditional transmits a sense of exclusivity. It's super-modern and yet connected with the classics because every piece is the product of a tradition of ancient craft. The Ferragamo girl is cool, but she's got culture."

*Ghetto Royale* & Fab Frivolity Rule Chanel Cruise 2013 Show Held at Versailles

"Frivolity is a healthy attitude," Karl Lagerfeld explains about his "Versailles in a Socialist France" collection for Cruise '13. "I know people who were saved by frivolity."  Meaning 18th century deets & silhouettes - like bottom-heavy panniers - in lightweight 21st century chambrays, tech-forward denim and even plastic.  Plus ruffles. And sneakers - but with platforms to make them more Marie Antoinette-approved.

Above the neck, Peter Phillips, Creative Director of Chanel Makeup opted for tres let-them-eat-cake shades of rose and petal pink and special runway-only mini velvet "tattoos" of the iconic interlocking-Cs logo.  Along with Sam McKnight's Dutch-boy bobs in pastel hues, the overall effect, according to Phillips, was meant to evoke "girly" but "rebel".  

The bold pink eyeshadow will be available as part of the the *Versailles de CHANEL* collection available in December 2012.

ghd Helps Deliver a GHD (good hair day)

Many of this spring & summer's runway styles feature either a middle part or deep side part and are relatively straight - and straightforward to replicate, provided you have the right tools at your fingertips:

TOOL #1: The right brush. Smooth, sleek styles need a paddle or dressing brush, while wavy or curlier coiffures are easy to achieve with a ceramic radial brush to create lift at the root and curls galore.

TOOL #2: Good gadgetry. Ideally, your hairdryer should fit comfortably in your hand, be powerful and provide you with a lot of flexibility by having enough different heat settings.  Whatever style you're going for, when you're done with the drying part, at the very end, finish with a good cold blast of air to help set the style and make it last.
