Wear a Diamond Pin (or pins) from DeBeers, Tiffany or Fred Leighton in an Updo a la Christian Lacroix Haute Couture? Why Not. Give a Good Fashion Expert 'Do With Some Velvet Ribbon & Some Chic Vintage-y Brooches. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

A ladylike updo is chic, true, but unless you have your own stylist on staff to create a hair extravaganza such as this - spied on Christian Lacroix's haute couture runway - a D-I-Y updo can feel, well, a bit bland.

Lacroix_hair_pic_1   (Photo from Vogue magazine)

All you need to sex up your next updo is some velvet ribbon & an eyecatching brooch. However, instead of trying to figure out how to affix a weighty brooch directly to your coiffure:

  • Pin the brooch to the ribbon.
  • Wrap the ribbon around your hair.
  • Affix with bobby pins that match the ribbon.
  • For an elegant, tone-on-tone look, brunettes should go for a brown or black ribbon, while blondes should opt for something lighter-hued.

Debeers_brooch  DeBeers Cocktail Fizz Brooch

This Cocktail Fizz Brooch from DeBeers - DeBeers.com - is a fun update on a classic (even the name is great), while the Tiffany Lace Brooch - Tiffany.com - has vintage echoes of grandmas fine jewels. Or, in the classic Hollywood more-is-more vein, pull a Fred Leighton - FredLeighton.com - & not only wear a diamond brooch in your hair, but cover every spare inch of the rest of your bod in diamonds.

FASHIONTRIBES FILES: FAB FASHION FINDS: TOP 10 FALL COLLECTIONS AS SEEN BY BLOGETTE: INCLUDING PROENZA SCHOULER, BOUDICCA, PETER SOM, CHLOE AND MORE-PODCAST

MY FAVORITE ACTIVITY IS SHOPPING.  IF YOU DONATE TO THE FUND, I WOULD LIKE PETER SOM, CHLOE, PROENZA SCHOULER BOUDICCA AND MORE FOR FALL 2005-MP3 File

Shopping is my cardio.  I know how cheesy this sounds, but it's an honest statement.  I studied fashion because I thought designing would feel like buying.  It doesn't.  My dream would be to be able to afford the pleasure of splurging on something every time I walk out the door of my home.  While I can't do this yet, I like to break down each season as if I could.  The most pleasurable time, for me at least, to shop is on a warm summer day, ice coffee in hand.  Unfortunately, this means I am shopping for fall.  I much prefer shopping for summer clothing, but if the shoe fits....

BLOGETTE'S LIST-O-MANIA: MY 10 FAVORITE FALL COLLECTIONS

00160f1CHLOE
00350f100220f_100670f

There is a chic ease to Cloe that no other designer seems to replicate.  Phoebe Philo-who made news first as assistant to Ms. McCartney, then as head designer herself-had her loyal assistants finish the collection upon her 3 month maternity leave to have daughter, Maya.  They did her proud.  Not only was she front row cheering, Chloe is on every shoppers major hit list.  The gorgeous, slouchy drape, beautiful laces, drop waist dresses and leather goods are spot on, as usual.  I love the Bermuda shorts and wool capelet.  Philo was on hand at the show to cheer on her team, as were Milla Jovovich and Lou Dillon, perennial fashion it-girls.

00190f ZAC POSEN
00380f00280f

When I look at Zac Posen's age-to-success ratio, i feel sick.  When I look at his Handy-work, I feel cured.  With an ode to Joan Crawfordian glamour, Posen sent out very few day looks.  But what he did send out was stellar.  Balloon sleeve blouses, fitted skirts, draped gowns with gold cording at the waist and neck.  No wonder his front row features the glam squad-including Ashley Olsen and Claire Danes.  With his enterprise now backed by P.Diddy, you can only see his success elevating.  So maybe he can send me one of those gorgeous blouses?

00150fUNITED BAMBOO
00170f 00300f

I am a UBOO fan.  I have always liked the way the charm of what they do plays off the tradition they infuse their line with.  While some feel their collection hearkened to Ghesquiere's Balenciaga of not too long ago, the mix of suiting, colour and shape were actually an homage to Solaris, Trakovsky's 1972 science fiction flick.  Designers Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham were smart enough to juxtapose the theme-in the form of colour and interesting detail- against tradition- simple wools.  The collection got even better after the colour section ended, producing a series of suits with genius cuts and gorgeous details.

00070f STELLA MCCARTNEY
00360f_1 _1610617_paltrowandmccartneyap

There is a reason Stella McCartney has so many friends.  Who wouldn't want to don her clothing?  Another collection playing off of volume- she channeled vintage Balenciaga-- this was exquisite.  I love the voluminous wool coats with ties, the over-sized sweaters and the simple colour scheme.  My favorites were the short version of Gwyneth's Golden Globe dress in McCartney's signature pink, and her wool jackets which played up structure and volume somehow simultaneously.  McCartney's team obviously loves her-they put the finishing touches on the collection as she gave birth to son Miller.

00240f LUELLA BARTLEY
00360f200390f00320f
The theme of this post is pregnant Brits.  Although Luella Bartley was panned for "rehashing"  I always love her signature look.  After a series of sweet, pussy bow blouses and slim cut skirts came beauteous prom dresses with little jackets.  The highlight at the end was the series of paillette pieces-especially the skirt paired with a simple t-shirt.  Natch, her accessories were up to par.  Bliss.

00110f_2 ROLAND MOURET
00160f 00330f
Something about Mouret reminds me of Westwood.  Channeling Veronica Lake, I love his complex cuts.  The daywear was simple, tight and cropped.  Fitted skirts with pea-coat boleros and lovely knits.  His eveningwear is always divine-complex taffeta numbers.

00210f_1 PROENZA SCHOULER
00300f1 00360f1
I think one of my top 2 collections was Proenza.  Per usual they did a kooky blend of truly feminine and super-hip-in the form of a tribute to mod-ish musical looks.  Instead of going overboard, they infused the good feeling of the mod scene into their style-showing lovely silk corsets and belted girdles, slouchy pants and great jackets.  I am dying for the houndstooth skirt.  It helps that they are such lovely boys too!!  Definitely don't miss their shoes or jewelry.

00060f_1 BOUDICCA
00080fBoudicca04
My other favorite.  The austere, sometimes sever look of Boudicca is nothing short of fantastic.  The almost all black collection was at once sharp and delicate.  Their mastery is clearly tailoring, and they play it up completely.  The balance between the delicate laces, knits embroidered with Olde English phrases such as Morissey, and the hard lines of their couture is impressive.  My pick?  The brown embossed leather puffer jacket.

00080f1DRIES VAN NOTEN
00760f00190f100780f

Dries, to me at least, is the best of the Belgians.  His mixture of grandeur and simplicity is striking, and he achieves it with such ease and balance, it is almost astonishing.  While this collection had mixed reviews (some felt the intro was way too much of a downer) I loved it.  The proportions of volume, the delicacy of fabric and the mix of colour were divine.

00090fPETER SOM
00310f00350f

Peter Som is in the school of young New Yorkers making a name for himself.  Som's girly, sweet cuts and beautiful fabrications make his collections ideal for all his socialite friends.  Besides being a total fashion darling, he lives up to his name but producing season after season.  I love the point d'sprit dresses and lacey shirts and jackets.

BLOG BONUS:
00040f_100430fGILES DEACON

British darling, cool guy, genious tailor.  I love his detailing.  Someone buy me the above dress.

Happy Shopping
-Rachel

BLOGETTE'S PIRATE BLOG-IO: AW, MADAMES, I DO ENJOY A BIT OF LACOQUETTE.BLOGS.COM-AND MAY I SAY YOU SHOULD TOO. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FLOW OF LOVE-PODCAST

Mon Cherie, Do try a little of La Coquette's blog.  A history of love-MP3 File

Frenchkids1Img_0632
from my daily readings i
am led to believe La coquette
is a young child with well
decked feet.

Here at fashiontribes we, well, LOVE love.  We love getting love, and in turn, yes, we love giving love.  And we LOVE La Coquette.  The daily blog of a 25 year old expat living in the land of her father (Oui, oui..'tis France), it provides a glimpse into the life we all wish we have, but aren't brave enough to pull off.
Img_0645

How do the links of love bind us (I promise this will be pesky and annoying, peppered with too many loves)?  I LOVE Andre.  Don't know why.  Just do.  His wife, Chloe (both go by first name only), apparently loves him too.  So much so that she named her little boutique Madame Andre (see genius La Coquette post here).  Aww love.  Well, I loved the pic I saw of Andre and Chloe together, and wanted to find more information about the store.  Hence La Coquette (the first person to come up when you type in Madame Andre on Google).  Maybe I should give a history of lazy....
Img_8354_2

And then...LOVE!!! I became stupidly, ragingly addicted to La Coquette.  I go a few times a day.  I worry, ridiculously, for her if there is no post on any given day.  I am heading out to a psychiatrist now...

Fashiontribes Files-Our own Rachel is Coming to Los Angeles. Is California ready? Trade tips on Shopping, Eating, and being Fun (and I already know I have to go to FRED SEGAL)!!-PODCAST

Images_5
Can you say Culture Clash?-MP3 File

Loyal Minions:
Despite the fact that I think I know everything, I sadly do not.  Let's begin with my impending trip to LA.  I have never been to California, and having grown up in the "elite" north east, I have been told many a time that California, and Californians for that matter, would not enjoy my presence in their state.  I am quite appalled at the fact that I have been warned that I will have to DRIVE everywhere.   I was stunned when, in trying to make a hotel reservation, the very LAID BACK clerk left me on hold for 10 minutes.  Nonetheless, I am eager to begin my love affair with Los Angeles.  I am overwhelmed with the options at hand:restaurants, shops, places to get cosmetic surgery...the list goes on and on.  HERE IS WHERE YOU COME IN!!!  Tell me what I should be doing.  Or, better yet, give me incentive.  Ask me questions that I can only answer once I arrive at my destination.
Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.
I think this could be a long term relationship.....
-Rachel

FASHIONWEEK THROUGH A LENS: BABYPHAT

Yet again, I had to lie my way in at this off-site show, way downtown.

The snotty Asian dude with the clipboard wasn't having it, so I decided to try my luck with the head PR chick. I "explained" to her that a mistake had been made, and that, of course, my name should be on the list. (and it damn well should!) For some reason, she assumed that I was from Knight Ridder, and asked if I was Steven. Well, duh, I concurred, and she told me to get a pass from the aforementioned snotty Asian dude, who was much less snotty when issued orders from his boss chick.

The show took forever to start because so many celebs were doing red carpet. The red carpet at the end of the show was madness: it took me 15 minutes to even exit the building. And we're not even talking A-list celebs -- it's more like Shannon Dougherty, Lil Kim, some guy from N'Sync, and Usher.

FASHION WEEK THROUGH A LENS: PROJECT RUNWAY

Running directly from the Kenneth Cole to the craziness of the Project Runway show, I had to lie my way in. They were only letting in photographers from major wire services, and looked on the list and asked me if I was so-and-so, so of course, I said "yes".

For us photographers, the biggest thing about this show was that they wanted everyone to stay for two tapings. It never happened. Basically, everyone bolted after the first taping, not to run to another show, but for lunch. But, what was really, really annoying was the crane-mounted camera that kept moving across the runway and interfering with our shots. It was probably the only show -- actually it was the only show -- where TV took priority over photography.

And Heidi Klum -- way more gorgeous in person than you would believe.

FASHION WEEK THROUGH A LENS: GETTING A GOOD SPOT

You could tell it was the end of the week because all of the out-of-town photographers had run out of clothes, and were sporting the T-shirts that they’d gotten free with their press kits. Now, in addition to the ladders we schlepped around, we had a uniform to make us look even more like a team of shop-fitters.

Towards the end of the week, there were more and more "hot" shows (in air quotes) and the media pits were getting increasingly crowded. We had to wait in the press holding area to be let into the shows and set up, and the earlier we arrived, the better the chance of nailing a good spot in the media riser.

The Photographer Food Chain: Photographers use duct tape to mark off their "spot." If you see a spot marked "AP", you tend to set yourself up somewhere else. But, if you shoot for Cosmo and you find a better spot marked "Jim Jones", then you set yourself up and Jim can get lost.
