The Climate Change in Your Closet
This fur & sweater look showed up on the Michael Kors runway. For spring. Cashmere & a fur stole…in spring?!
Not only does Fall start about a week later than it used to, but Spring starts up to 10 days earlier as climate change continues to throw the traditional fashion calendar into stormy disarray. (11 of the Earth’s 12 warmest years since 1890 have occurred after 1996.) And the difference between seasons just ain’t whadditchustabe as the weather continues to morph into a single extended season with some variations in temps & inclement weather. Plus, we all spend so much time indoors & in our cars, we don’t really need the heavy winter clothes of grandma’s day. Transitioning from spring to fall often means rocking the same pair of jeans, but tossing on a cashmere sweater or maybe a blazer - ie. just adding a layer. Going forward, how might fashion designers respond to climate change?” In the New York Fashion Week of the future,” predicts one writer about the catwalks of 2025, “we might see Marc Jacobs showing just one Fall/Winter/Summer/Spring collection.”
