"The TIME 100 list is about the infinite possibilities of influence and the power of influence to change the world," notes the Managing Editor, Rick Stengel, about the always fun & always controversial list which this year includes 54 international figures from 37 countries - more than any previous TIME 100.
For the first time that there are more international names on the list than American, such as: the new Mrs. Prince William & her younger sister, Pippa Middleton, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, Maria das Graças Silva Foster, Dilma Rousseff, Wang Yang, Xi Jinping, Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, Angela Merkel, Christine Lagarde, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy & René Redzepi. "Before microphones and television were invented, a leader had to stand in front of a crowd and bellow," continues Stengle. "Now [one] can tweet a phrase that reaches millions in a flash. Influence was never easier—or more ephemeral. Which is why we try to choose those people whose influence is both lasting and, with a few notable exceptions, laudable."
Like Rihanna, one pick with which I certainly can't disagree."She's one of the coolest, hottest, most talented, most liked, most listened to, most followed, most impressive artists at work today," agrees Stella McCartney in her guest-contributed piece for the issue. "But she does it in her own stride." By striding around in this Stella jumpsuit, Rihanna definitely rocks some hardcore fashion cred.
