When the stylist-turned-designer couldn't find the jewelry he wanted for photoshoots, he started making it himself, Martha Stewart style...with a hot-glue gun. "It looked great for the shoot, but it had no structural integrity," acknowledges Jersey (as those-in-the-know know to call him). "People wanted to buy it but I was like, 'no way, it's not gonna last even until the end of the day!'"
But people kept asking, so he decided it was time to learn how to make pieces that would last a bit longer. A lot longer. Like his signature "chain-mail" pieces handcrafted from crystals and wire - which he dreams of someday taking in a more Paco Rabanne/Courreges/Cardin'esque direction. "I have this really crazy daydream for a while now, almost 15 years, of doing complete garments out of this crystal & metal chainmail. I did do one dress that took me close to a year to make, but I would love one day to do a full 60-piece runway collection. That would be the ultimate goal!"
His jewelry is available at JamesMurrayJewelry.com.
