Your Healthy Skin Checklist
From sun exposure and pollution to those festive booze-filled evenings out, your complexion is constantly under assault. Since there is more to a healthy complexion that just the skin care products you choose (although you might want to consider giving facial toning a try) here are some easy and effective tips to help you resurrect that rosy glow.
Shun the Sun
The sun's UV rays break down collagen and elastin which leads to premature aging and wrinkles, as well as saggy skin, crow's feet and lines which only become more prominent with time. Just a few minutes a day of sun exposure can add up to a lot of cumulative damage, so wearing a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 15 - even in winter - is one of the easiest ways to fight off sun damage before it starts. During the hottest times of the day, stay in the shade and protect the rest of your skin by wearing long, loose clothing, as well as a hat and sunglasses when you can.
Urban life is glamorous. The pollution not so much. Dirt and grime can lodge in your pores, disrupting your skin's balance and leading to spots, pimples and other blemishes. Remove dead skin cells by exfoliating thoroughly once a week (but don't overdo; too much scrubbing can damage the skin's protective barrier, creating other problems). Invest in a gentle, high-quality exfoliating cream or some exfoliating gloves and massage your skin everywhere in small circles. By increasing your circulation, your complexion will look more vibrant and glowy.
Use the Right Products
As we age, our skin becomes weaker and thinner making it prone to sagging, lines and wrinkles. Cell turnover and collagen production slows and elastin loses its spring meaning the skin is not as supple as it once was. We can’t stop ourselves from getting older, but we can minimize the effects of aging by using a suitable skincare products. Find a skin care specialist you trust - or start by finding your correct skin type so you can use the right products. Need a more aggressive approach? Non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are a quick (albeit temporary) wrinkle fix.
...& Lastly, Behave!
Booze, ciggies, late nights...they all leave you looking worse for wear. Ditto stress & anxiety. Dark undereye bags and stress lines are not attractive! You owe it to yourself to eat a healthy diet rich in fruit & vegetables, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water & exercising regularly to sweat out toxins. And mama knew best: going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting a good night's sleep is one of the most effective beauty secrets ever.
Treat your skin with care and you could knock years off your age.
...& do tell: which products and routines do you use to get that healthy glow?
