Yo, You Oneadem Mooks?! 'Den Whydontcha Dress Like It!
"What the F**k is a Mook?" is one of the taglines of Mooks, an Aussie streetwear label with a cool devil-may-care vibe (even their logo, a lightbulb, has horns).
Curiosity piqued, I dug and found out that it's from the Scorsese's classic "Mean Streets" (1973). One of the film's mobster/hustlers calls the other a "mook." "Called me a mook?" responds the so-dubbed, and according to the real-life incident on which the scene in the movie was based, Marty explains that "he got crazy" and just as he was about to toss a table in the air, paused and asked: "What's a mook?" No one knew. Mayhem ensued. It was only later, in San Francisco, that young Scorsese discovered "mook" was slang among the Neapolitan people - the ongoing rivals of the Sicilians - for "bigmouth".
However, you don't have to be a bigmouth to send a clear message with your threads. Mooks clothing line was started in Australia as an homage to NYC hipsters, hustlers, wise guys, and yes, big mouths. "In 1992, the first Mooks store landed smack in the middle of Melbourne’s boutique shopping strip, Chapel Street," explain Mooks's resident mooks. "Before it was over-run by chain stores and souped-up petrol heads. The music was loud, the staff didn’t give a s^*t and people were lining up out the door for Mooks now legendary t-shirts."
For my mook-money, I'd be rocking this excellent straw Fedora and Ellipse Aztec tee.
