Once you've got all your wardrobe basics - perfect-fit jeans for flats & heels, some great white tees, a go-everywhere day dress, a sexy pencil skirt, a trenchcoat, a leather jacket, etc. - what turns a closet from a source of "I have nothing to wear" stress into a fun place to spend time is filling it with pieces you find inspiring. These are items you discover when you're shopping and fall head over heels in love with, despite how impractical they might seem at first glance. The trick to turning an unexpected splurge into a wardrobe "investment" is knowing before you buy that you'll get tons and tons of use from the item. When you come upon these types of pieces, a good rule of thumb is to Take 5, go find some designer caffeine, grab a napkin and jot down 5 different ways you'd wear the piece using only clothing & accessories that you already own. If you find you just don't have enough in your closet already, you probably won't wear it that often, so give it a miss; if you can quickly come up with 5 outfits, then you've go yourself a winner...now drink up & go snag it before someone else does!
This white tux/dinner jacket (available at farfetch.com) definitely stopped my heart the minute I laid eyes on it. But *sigh* it's Balmain. Meaning fabulous, yes, but also quite fabulou$$$$$$$$$$$$. So how would I wear it? A no-brainer, everyday-easy way is of course with jeans - especially a pair of boyfriend jeans rolled up, a cute splashy tee and some neutral flats; shades of taupe always look so smart with white. For stepping out, white + leopard looks fabu, as does white + a mix of yellows & chartreuse.
Here are 4 more ways to wear this smashing jacket. What would you pair it with?
