Fashionable Food: Whoopie Pies (In!) & Sweet Cupcakes (Out!) but Not Lasagna Cupcakes (In!)
Just as you treat your wardrobe to seasonal updates, so your palate is deserving of something fabulously fresh! According to Allmenus.com - which has more that 250,000 menus, making it the largest such resource - the chic'est cupcakes are now savory, like a mini-lasagna or one filled with meat. And Kobe beef? O-U-T! Pork? IN! Ditto gluten-free fare, miniature foods, and, of all things, Whoopie Pies
Traditionally made from two mounds of chocolate cake, each around 3 inches (8-10 cm) wide and filled with French vanilla cream, they are thought to have originated with Amish farmers' wives in Pennsylvania; when lucky farmers discovered them their lunch pails, they apparenlty shouted "whoopie!" Whoopie Pies have now gone upscale and available at places like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and even chichi artisanal Patisseries in Park Slope (where Carrie Bradshaw would probably be getting her sugar fix on, now that Magnolia Bakery cupcakes are so last year). "Whoopie pies have been on the rise for several years, and nobody can pinpoint the reason they finally broke into the national consciousness," observes The New York Times. "But the snacks evoke a more homespun era that seems to provide some comfort amid the economic gloom."
