A Brief & Breezy History of Havaianas - Our Fave Summer Footwear
1962: Inspired by typical Japanese sandals made from fabric straps and rice-straw soles, the first pair of Havaianas is born. Even today, all Havaianas - a Brazilian-based brand of flip flops named for the Portuguese term for "Hawaiians" - still pay homage to the "Zori" with a trademark textured rice-pattern footbed.
1970: The catchy slogan "Havaianas. The real ones" launches.
1990: "Havaianas. Everyone wears them." Just like the slogan says, people like Malu Mader, Bebeto, Hortencia, and Luana Piovati all show off their Havaiana-clad feet on TV.
1998: A special World Cup edition of Havaianas is created, featuring a small Brazilian flag on the strap. The '98 World Cup title may not have belonged to Brazil, but the coveted World Cup Havaianas model always will.
2000: Havaianas mania goes global, eventually spreading to 60 countries worldwide.
2003: Havaianas go Hollywood as Oscar nominees start receiving an exclusive edition.
2004: H.Stern & Havaianas collaborate on a pair finished with 18k gold and encrusted in bling. Diamonds are forever, and now, so are Havaianas.
2007: Havaianas finally become available in the US permanently.
TODAY: Choose from over 200 styles for fashionistas, fashionistos, and mini-me's in training.
