The Nina Garcia Intrigue Continues
The fun, gossipy game of musical chairs starring Nina Garcia, Elle and Project Runway is still afoot.
Since parting ways with Elle magazine, Nina Garcia is rumored to be going to Marie Claire...which might be replacing Elle as the sponsoring partner of Project Runway...which is itself transitioning from Bravo to the Lifetime Network (starting with Season 6 in November)...even as MC's Fashion Director, Tracy Taylor, is apparently leaving...which handily paves the way for Garcia.
"We have no changes in Marie Claire's fashion department to announce at this time," a Hearst spokesperson cryptically emailed Fashion Week Daily. Hmmm...considering how precipitously the magazine's newsstand sales have plummeted since EIC Lesley Jane Seymour's exit almost two years ago, an infusion of Project Runway fabulousness could be just what the circulation doctor ordered.
About her tenure at Elle, in a recent interview with Prestige Hong Kong, the author of the well-received The Little Black Book of Style commented that, “Some people become too self-important. Sometimes people get overly competitive."
Openly at odds with the magazine's Creative Director, Joe Zee, who started at the magazine in 2007, Garcia returned from maternity leave to find Zee's name dominating hers on the masthead, his new Style A to Zee column rivaling her Fashionina, and his own Tyra Banks-produced reality show, Fashionista, airing this summer - chronicling aspiring fashion assistants vying for a job at the magazine - in the mix. "At the end of the day, fashion should be fun. It’s supposed to beauty, it’s supposed to be fun. Sometimes some people take it too seriously. But it is a business. It is a very serious billion-dollar business. It’s never gone to my head. Maybe it was my family that kept me grounded.”
