The New Must-Have Accessory: Chic Birth Control
750,000 teens will become pregnant this year, with 3 in 10 girls getting pregnant at least once before they hit the age of 20. Just under half of teen moms ever graduate from high school - of which only 1.5% earn a college degree - and 80% of unmarried teenage mothers end up on welfare. These fun factoids have been compiled by the Candie's Foundation which is addressing the issue of teen pregnancy by spreading the message using the power of celebs like Fergie, Fall Out Boy, and Ciara.
Like teen idols, teen girls also love fashion and accessories, which is why this new contest sponsored by Yaz oral contraceptive is decidedly fabulous.
They are looking for aspiring designers to redesign the iconic birth control case, and have launched the contest in partnership with Step Up Women's Network, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, and Project Runway'ista Nina Garcia. "The design challenge we're posing is a fashion transformation unlike any other," says Garcia. "We're taking an iconic accessory - the birth control case - and asking aspiring designers to take a shot at redesigning it into a chic, more sophisticated carrying case that they could slip into their purses."
The winner will receive $10,000 toward design materials & software or enrollment in design classes. Enter by June 30, 2008 at Glam.com or PillPackMakeover.com. The winner will be announced in fall 2008 during Fashion Week.
Warning! Soapbox alert:
This post was sponsored by Yaz and Glam.com. However, because I so strongly believe in the importance of birth control in all women's lives, I support this contest...and had the money donated to charity. Okay, I'll get off my high horse now.
