Christian Siriano Designs a Prom Gown...for Your Online Avatar
Tuxes, corsages, and bridesmaid'ish dresses...prom is a tuxedo'd and tiara'd rite of passage for millions of high schoolers that, a recent survey of 60,000 teens found, is actually a major source of stress: what to wear, who to go with, and how to foot the bill. This being 2008 rather than 1958, they also revealed that they wish their social event of the season was less like their mother's. “We all know real-world proms can be a little played out, notes Project Runway Season 4 winner, Christian Siriano, the King of All Things Fierce who will be designing an exclusive line of prom garb for avatars attending Gaia Online's first-ever virtual prom, Prom Crashers (sort of a Prom 3.0 - with fashions and dance-offs, but no annoying chaperones or huge expenses).
"I’m excited to be part of an event that brings some creativity and originality to this time-honored tradition. The prom fashions I designed for this event are fierce, flawless and fabulous and will really let Gaians express their unique style!”
Like a real-world prom, there will be dance contests, picture-taking, yearbook signing, and of course, socializing...and for one lucky winner, a real-life creation custom-designed by Siriano. Unlike the real-world version, Prom Crashers is a weekend-long affair being held in an extremely active community of more than five million users (which definitely evens the odds when it comes to finding a date). “With Prom Crashers, we wanted to take a completely new spin on an old tradition," notes Gaia Online's VP of Creative & User Experience, Scott Kinzie, "and who better to help us than an edgy young fashion designer like Christian Siriano who embodies the independent and innovative spirit of our Gaians.”
Registration for the virtual prom is now open to anyone 13 or older at GaiaOnline.com - to look for a date or a group of pals to go with, chat with others about their prom plans, generate play lists, or, best of all, shop for prom finery using in-world currency, Gaia Gold, or cold hard Cash (aka US dollars). The actual festivities kick off on Friday, May 16 at 12 pm (Cali time) and last until Monday, May 19 at 9am.
